Reformatted Quickbooks company file now damaged

Hello All,
Just reformatted company's bookkeeping computer. Installed Quickbooks 2004 Pro and did all the updates.

Now when I go to open the company file which I transferred to an external hard drive i get the error that it is not a quickbooks data file or it is damaged.

I initially upgraded to IE7 but then quickbooks told me to downgrade to 6 and I did but I still can not open the file.

Should I try uninstalling quickbooks and then opening the company file without upgrading the quickbooks software?
 
I would open a backup of the company file but upon looking at the backup cd-rw where the bookkeeper backs up Quickbooks I dont see anything (and apparently she backed up yesterday!
