The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

is there a way to run quick books away from the office & sync backup when I return to the office
Tags: quickbooks Pro 2008
I'm currently storing the data file on my sbs server. I do that because it gets backed up automatically. I'm a one man shop and would like to take quickbooks with me so that I can invoice the customers while I'm at their location. Is there a way to cache the quickbooks file so that when I get back into the office it will sync with the server based file.

sure you can setup your sbs for remote desktop connection. the big problem with quickbooks with using remote desktop connection is printing remotely. with minor configuration at your office you can log onto your server remotely as if you were sitting directly in front of it and have access to quickbooks. quickbooks does not support this because they want you to buy the enterprise edition, which i can promise you,  you dont need it. i have setup plenty of terminal servers for quickbooks use remotely, it is super easy and you can probaly use the equipment that is currently in your office. i can take you through this with an ease, just tell me the type of internet connection you have and modem/router brand name and model number. The trick to getting around the printing issue, when you install quickbooks there is a emulator printer called "intuit internal printer" in your printers folder. you print using the printer, the invoice is transferred into a .pdf document and you are then given the option to save the invoice. you can then copy paste the document to the pc that you are using remotely to connect to the server or you can email it to the remote pc. then all you to do is print. minor configuration to your server and modem/router are also needen

Are you a QuickBooks: Premier Accountant or Enterprise Solutions: Accountant user?
With QuickBooks Premier: Accountant Edition, you get FREE QuickBooks Remote Access service to two clients' QuickBooks files for 12 months (Free offer includes access to QuickBooks-only data). Unlimited meetings included.

Or you can pay the standard rates, view here for details: http://quickbooks.intuit.com/product/add_ons/remote_access.jhtml?view=overview#tabAnchor

Nothing is free, else you sacrifice security. How is a respectable account suppose to tell all his clients I will need to open up your computer to the internet, for anyone to see it, but don't worry, only I will be accessing it?

I work with several small offices, who don't have their own VPNs or hardware firewalls. So, most likely you will need to purchase one of these options, if they don't have it already. Nice thing about this option, its part of Quickbooks and very easy to setup, it was developed for accounts to connect to thier own or clients pc.

Once connected, you can either access the data directly, or update your own local copy of the clients records.

There are many other options, like PcAnywhere for example, you would purchase the software and have no reoccuring fees and you could set it up to either dial into to the client via Modem.

Also, I misread your question. The solution I provided works best for where clients have their own copy of quickbooks and maintain thier own records, however in your case I would still be concerned about security if you were going to host all your clients records. You can do cbmm method, just make sure your secure, VPN or tunneling works best.

You may want to also look at this utility: http://allwaysync.com, its a free utility that syncs your data via a USB drive. Nice an easy :)

I have implemented Quickbooks in many scenarios and have always tended to go down the VPN route for remotely accessing the Quickbooks files. Since you have an SBS server you could easily configure the Remote Access facility, which is protected using your domain credentials and secured using at least 128-bit encryption. Of course, opening up any route into your network onto the Internet is never going to be secure, but the Microsoft VPNs are secure and by setting one up, you could also remotely access your files stored on the server.

The only problem I can see with this is you would need an Internet connection configured for your laptop at the sites you are visiting, otherwise you wouldn't be able to connect the VPN and access the server.

The other method would be to copy the Quickbooks database files to your laptop when you intend to go to a client, then copy them back when you get back to your network. I would recommend against this, and also recommend against any form of synchronization software, since we're talking about complex database files which can be easily corrupted when copied around all the time.

VPN has always worked for my clients and there is no reason why it wouldn't work for you.
