Question

QB Premier 2007 won't start on Windows Server 2008 (x64)

Asked by: Miles_Thornton

I have QB Premier 2007 DBs migrated to our new 64-bit server from our older 32-bit server model; I have reinstalled QB and configured the DB Manager service; which seems to be working. Our users in the office are working fine; sharing the QB database on the server. However, when the remote users log onto the server and try to open the user interface on the server; it gets most of the way open and crashes with the error logged below in the code sample section.

I have tried reinstalling. I have tried changing the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) settings to "essential windows programs and services only". I have run the "reboot.bat" file to re-register all the DLLs. I need to know if anyone else has had this issue and how to resolve it.

What anti-virus related products are you using on the Server?

Sometimes I've had to do some tweaking depending on the anti-virus related products where I make them skip scanning the folder Quickbooks in installed to and also skip scanning the folder the Quickbooks data files are saved in.

Another test, temporarily give one of the users admin rights and see if the problem goes away.  You may have a permissions issue.

Torrey

I am using ESET's NOD32 "Smart security 4" suite, business edition. Could this be a firewall issue?
As for permissions; I am logged on as the Admin on the box and it won't start up for me...

I have not experienced any firewall issues with any version of Quickbooks on a Server.

Does NOD32 have an area in the settings to omit scanning certain folders, files, or file types?  Some programs will apply it to all users when connected remotely, some allow each user to have own custom settings.

Try logging in the server console as someone without admin rights to see if it works for them.  I did have one install where Quickbooks didn't work for users with admin rights but did work for all users without admin rights - which was fine because none of the remote users had Admin rights.

Remember the original thread on the Exchange that you responded to and asked me for some assistance was dealing with Quickbooks 2008 on a 2008 Server and NOT Quickbooks 2007.  Since Quickbooks 2007 came out before Server 2008 it doesn't suprise me that it has issues.  After all, we are dealing with Intuit which has horrible support and documentation for installing their products on Servers.  I know Quickbooks 2008 works on Server 2008 because I've done it in over a dozen different roll-outs.

In addiiton, the link below from Intuit's web site documents that only 2008 and above versions of Quickbooks will work on a 2008 Server.

http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/pages/knowledgebasearticle/1009944

You can keep hacking away at it but the odds of getting the 2007 version to work on the 2008 Server are slim unless someone knows the special trick, which I could not figure out or find anywhere.

Regards,
Torrey
