You were correct - it was a firewall issue. The links had some good advice, but didn't solve the problem.
The real issue was that I was allowing port 10180 through the firewall, which is the port used by QuickBooks 2008. However, I am using Quickbooks 2007, which uses port 10172. Once I'd allowed port 10172 through the firewall instead of 10180, everything worked great!
This page alluded to the different ports for the different versions (where it tells you to telnet to the server on various ports):
http://support.quickbooks.
QB 2006: Port 10160
QB 2007: Port 10172
QB 2008: Port 10180
QB 2008: Ports 80, 8019, 56719, and 55333 through 55337

Sounds like a firewall issue. Have you tried disabling it altogether just as a test. adley/arch ive/2009/0 4/21/ insta lling-quic kbooks-200 8-on-sbs-2 008.aspx 09/01/sbs- 2008-and-q uickbooks- 2008- or-20 09.html
Susan has written an update to the article you have referenced, which outlines firewall exceptions 1/2 way down the page:

She also references an article by Philip Elder outlining the firewall exceptions by port:
