The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Home Office Tax Line Item in Quicken H&B?

Tags: Intuit, Quicken Home & Business, 2008, Quicken and TurboTax require two different forms of entry?
How do I get the proper percentage for my home office expenses to show in the ongoing reports? (i.e., How do I enter the percentage of rent and utilities it should actually use when calculating business expenses?)

Since I have a home office, I have connected the rent and utilities categories to tax line "Form 8829" so that I can take the home office deduction. When calculating the home office deduction I use (say) 1/4 of my apartment as the office, so 1/4 of the rent and utilities are business expenses. TurboTax calculates this correctly when preparing my taxes by asking how much of my apartment constitutes my home office (25%) and only using that percentage of the total.

However, in the monthly profit and loss calculations, Quickbooks H&B treats the _entire_ expense for rent and utilities as a business expense, not just the 25% that actually is. Therefore my monthly business expenses in these major categories are four times what they should be--making all of the Profit/Loss numbers completely inaccurate.

Since actual home office expenses (as Tax Line Item Form 8829) are by definition only a percentage of the total paid out, there has to be a way to address this.

The only work-arounds I can come up with are:

-- to split each entry as I make it into two separate categories (75% to "apartment rent", 25% to "Form 8829 business expenses rent"), but this is not only a tedious way to enter them, it means that at tax time I will have to go through and manually recategorize _all_ of these transactions as "Form 8829 business expense rent" so that TurboTax can take 25% of the total for its calculations

-- to remove the tax line item connection completely, meaning that I am able to see none of my home office expenses during the year, _and_ that I have to change the category association at tax time so that TurboTax can deal with it properly.

Considering that TurboTax deals with this quite efficiently, and considering the amount of formulas for various uses in place in Quicken, I can't see how something as simple as an instruction to "always use only __% of Form 8829 expenses when making business expense calculations and forecasts" could be
missed. And surely I am not the first person with a home office to be stuck with an all-or-nothing scenario that makes all of the business estimation and tracking numbers hopelessly inaccurate.

Help?
(Sorry if this sounds a bit cranky, but it's mostly verbatim from support emails I sent to Intuit. Their rep essentially never could understand my question and I gave up. I'm hoping you all can help. )

I do not have that version of Quicken but I would suggest looking at editing the report or creating your own.  You could then put a line or calculation in to use the percent.  I will try to see how this may work on other reports in the Quicken I have or see what I can find.  Please let me know if you have tried this and/or take a look to see if it is possible.

Let me know if you have a question.

The "report" is an automatic totaling of the accounts, keeping a running total of where the business is.

Doing up a separate report would be a pain, but could work. I just don't know how to customize any report to that extent (using a percentage of one category), or how to use percentages in reports at all. Can you explain the basics of how to do so?

Never mind... with my week trial up and only 1 of 4 questions answered, I'm unsubscribing. Thanks for your attempt.

There is no solution for this question posted yet.

I have the exact same question.  What I'm looking for is someplace to enter in the business use percentage in Quicken so that Business reports are accurate.
