Question

Standard Company Hierarchy

Asked by: cedlinx

Hi Experts, I would love to know the standard hierarchy in a company (if there is any standard). Ours is a sales company although we are venturing into manufacturing (will this affect the hierarchy?) and we have the founder who is the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO), a chief operating officer (COO), secretary who doubles as legal adviser, chief accountant, Assistant general manager, general manager, regional manager, branch managers, cashiers, warehouse manager, stock managers (for each branch), cash manager (who collects all the money sold from all the branches), etc.

Please the esence of this is to know who reports to who and who controls/supervises who so that chances of fraud or conspiracy are greatly minimized if not eliminated.

Any comment will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Cedric.

Hello cedlinx,

You are refering to what is caled organizational structure ... It depends on a lot of factors such as company sector, culture, geography, size etc. There is no standard structure.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organizational_structure
Above link provides some details of various kinds of org structure.

I am in Nigeria which was colonized by Great Britain and so we have a lot of things in common. I want to know basically who should be higher up in the organogram between the Assistant General Manager, the Chief Accoutant and the secretary. If I get that, I could fix the rest.

Does this make another solution possible or do I still have to look at the link you posted (i haven't done that yet)?

Thanks for your quick response.

Unfortunately, there is no standard ... The organization hierarchy is defined based on size, requirement and culture ... typically you would have a common top level management ... this includes your CXOs, Board of directors etc.
Business unit specific higher management reports to this top level management - this would be corporate VP , senior GMs and likes
Then comes your middle level management ... GM, Director of a function etc
Followed by managers - Zonal manager, regional manager, area manager, branch manager etc
Followed by designations applicable to the specific business unit.

Okay, sorry if I ask dumb questions... the chief accountant and the general manager or assistant general manager, who will be superior? I mean in a company of about 40 or 50 employees, where the main functions are sales of certain products which yield huge turnovers.

If by Chief Accountant you are refering to equivalent of CFO, then CFO indeed is higher up in the hierarchy as compared to GM.

Is CFO same as chief financial officer? That is the one in charge of the company's accounts (deals with banks, approves/scrutinizes payments, ensures that the company's debtors are correctly tracked and so on). Just handle everything about finances. Also prepares the P & L (profit and loss) and other financial statements.

Yes .. thats CFO .. responsible for company finances
