My wife has an Acer Aspire 5610 with Windows xp SP3 on it. She bought the notebook 2½ years ago. At the company she was working, one colleague installed Kaspersky on her notebook.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: In the last two monthes, she experiences a slow-down on the notebook so that she has to wait for the Internet Explorer for two minutes to open. Also, other Windows programs work very slow. I once entered "Start > Settings >" and then clicked on "Performance and maintenance" The four arrowed lines appeared within two seconds, then the four symbols below. I once clicked "System" by using the touchpad, but nothing happened. I tried within the minute two more times, then used the "left mouse button" (LMB) twice. A few seconds after the last try, I heard a click & then the "System" window opened six times.
PROBLEM SOLVING: I installed www.memokit.com's BootKit, but there was hardly any change. Now, I want to try something else: A repartitioning of the C: drive. But there, I run into problems with Kaspersky, even when I stop it.
MY QUESTION: When I start the C: drive repartitioning, I get the following message:

Really, it is neither possible to remove this folder, nor to compress it (zip). Is there a way to get rid of this? I made a check disk (can be done for the C: drive only after a restart), but there was no error reported. (I mean that I haven't seen an error message. I could not find any log file that contains possible errors.)

I just want to find out what's going on on the notebook that makes it so slow. But I found out the reason: oh, how silly I am!! :-((( The physical memory is only 504 MB & the problem arises when the notebook starts to use the virtual memory.
I think this is the problem, and it can be solved easily by purchasing a new proper RAM module.
Adding ram will most likely remedy the issue. You are in luck since ram is generally cheaper than it used to be, even for notebook ram.
Though I'm curious, it has always had that much ram correct? But it wasn't always slow right?. Some type of application that is running constantly might have a memory leak or something. You might check which applications are using the most ram.
Are there any other anti spyware/virus programs installed other than Kaspersky? This is important.
I think you may be plugged up with spyware. There is s significant difference between anti-spyware programs and anti-virus programs. I recommend having one of each from different vendors. I don't recommend "suites" that sell a package incorporating the two features.
How much drive space do you have available? My Computer>C:>properties. You will see a graph of available disc space. A drive that is close to maxed out can cause problems.
Control Panel>Add Remove Programs. Check and see if there are any programs you don't need. Sometimes programs can slide in when you least expect them. Get rid of any you don't really need or use. Don't make the mistake of deleting windows updates or utilities you don't understand.
Partitioning will do nothing to help solve the problem of a computer that hangs and runs slow.

What is your reasoning for repartitioning the C drive?
