Good Morning,
First question:
Are you running the ePO application on a server in that LAN segment?

Browse All TopicsFirst off I would like to say that my primary responsibilitis don't include antivirus management/configuration. However, the guys in charge of it on my team don't seem to know what they're doing.
We're currently running VirusScan Enterprise 8.0 on an isolated LAN that has no internet connectivity and cannot be connected. We push an image to all new PCs that includes McAfee. All of the servers are updated by regularly downloading the .dat files from McAfee's site and uploading them to the servers.
When I got here I noticed that automatic updates were not setup on the client machines or servers. We insrtucted the 2 guys responsible for antivirus to configure the software so that all client machines and servers can make use of automatic updates. We also need to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.5. After months of trying, these guys still don't seem to know how to set it up properly. I think I know enough to set everything up on a LAN with internet access, however I'm not as familiar with the steps involved on an isolated network.
Currently when you select update now in the VirusScan console you receive the error "error ocurred while downloading file sitestat.xml. Unable to find a valid repository"
l have the ability to use one of my spare servers as a dedicated antivirus server if need be.
So in summary, please advise the best methods to enable automatic updates and perform the upgrade from 8.0 to 8.5 on an isolated network.

Too bad - it automates the entire process.
You can configure the 'update' location at each client.
Tools
Edit AutoUpdate Repository List
"Add"
Then configure the auto-updater to look (UNC path) at a share that is set up somewhere in that LAN segment.
You can update the DAT files in the Share using a Flash drive or some other portable device.
Post back if you have questions.

BTW - if you have the Enterprise version, ePO is part of the package.
You can stand that up on a Server in the LAN segment, console into it from any computer that can 'see' that server and automate the entire process - including the update to 8.5
ePO is one of the slickest network applications I ever worked with and recommend it exclusively for Enterprise AV.

Once you have ePO installed, you will be able to configure an 'Agent' push to all connected computers.
Once the agent is installed (configurable), it will automatically look to the server for all updates.
One of the neatest things about McAfee/ePO is that the Agent 'pulls' the updates from the server - instead of an application on the server trying to 'push' updates.
If you have any mobile devices, the Agent will navigate from anywhere in the world to your server and run the updates.
I used to setup two 'shares' (one on the ePO server, one on a member server), plus configure the NAI site as a fall back if the first two failed.
The first couple of Networks I configured were with on-site help from McAfee. They used to have Field Engineers who would come on-site for free and do the initial setup/configuration. After that, I was able to do it myself. Not really difficult after you've done it a couple of times.
We have some REAL McAfee types around here who can give you more details. I retired a year ago and am posting all of this from (a sometimes faulty) memory.
Good Luck,
Vic
Hah!
Sounds like the old "Sneaker Net" days.
Actually, I had a little bit of experience with isolated networks. Even though they had no access of any kind to the outside world, we ran all of the Security applications for protection against 'Insider' damage.
We had to use CD's to bring the DAT files in, but you can probably just use a 'Flash Drive' (Geek whistle) - depending on your corporate security policies.
Once you have the DAT files in place, you can have multiple repositories (any share in that network) that can automatically be populated.
ePO can do the populating for you or you can throw together some kind of simple batch command.

I'm having a problem updating the repository since this is a closed network. How do I set it up so that all my 8.0 clients upgrade to 8.5 and grab the latest .dat file? It looks VERY easy if this LAN segment had Internet access.
As of now, the client machines can successfully perform an autoupdate from the ePO server, but they're not upgrading themselves. They're pulling the latest .dat file from a share I created on the ePO server. I realize some more configuring needs to be done, I just can't find it :P
OK - this is all from memory and I haven't had a RAM upgrade for a long time.
In the ePO console piece, I used to set up 'Folders' that were configured to perform specific tasks.
I.E., "Install Agent", "Install McAfee client", etc.
This was a great function, because the Maintenance guys would add computers to the domain daily (with imaged loads), but the McAfee Agent and App could not be part of the Image.
Whenever ePO would find a new box without the Agent, I would move it to the Install Agent folder and the install would get pushed. Same with the client.
You can configure the 8.0 - 8.5 upgrade to work the same way - as long as ePO is running in that network segment.
At this point, I think you need to close this question out and post a new one. The older questions get and the more posts are made to them, the less likely it is that anyone new will jump in with fresh information.
Make sure you use all three 'Zones' whenever you post a question. Even if the Zone does not directly relate to your question (Server 2003), you will get a lot more sets of eyes taking a look at it.
You should post a link to this question (http://www.experts-exchan
I will stay out of your new question so that you get fresh ideas.
Good luck and enjoy yourself with ePO. Once you get comfortable with it, I think you will find it an excellent product.

All servers run 2003 SE and all client machines run XP SP2.
