Still, when loging into Vista McAfee starts up but without the on access scan. When right clicking on the Icon I see that "enable on access scan" is greyed out. Most of the time a fresh reboot helps.
Currently the option "disable on access scan" is greyed out. I do not know if it has something to do with it, but I cannot edit the settings on the above mentioned services either.
How can I prevent the greying out of the McAfee option?
PS If the "enable on access scan" option is greyed out, in the console also Access Protection and On Delivery Email Scanner, and Buffer Overrun are greyed out.

After hours of searching (guess the experts are on holiday ;-) I found that there are two parts of the solution: com/showth read.php?t =214628)
1. On Vista and Windows 7 one has to install the program with administrator rights. That ensures that the on access scan doesn't get disabled.
2. The fact that the option "disable on access scan" is greyed out is good, not bad. To disable that prevention:
1) Go to the console
2) Hit the properties for Access Protection
3) Look at the bottom of the window for a check box that says "Prevent McAffee Services from being stopped". Clear the checkbox.
