Question

McAfee updates from outside of the company's network

Asked by: hpsupport

Hi,

Current environment and configuration:
I have an EPO 4.0 patch 5 environment. Clients have McAfee agent 4.0 and VSE 8.7i patch 1.
Company has around 10 sites in which the servers are set up as a Superagent and distributed repositories.
The setup of agent policy's repositories tab is "use this repository list", select repository by "ping time" and the respository list contain the 10 superagent and "Mcafeehttp" in the last position.

My issue; when PCs are external to the network (such as home, hotel, etc.), if I run the McAfee update process, the update window is stuck at "Starting update session" for a very long time.

My question; is there a way to set up McAfee so that when PCs are external to the network, it updates directly from Mcafeehttp.

Thank you.

Regards,

WA

yes i have this set on my Pro Pilot setup (think older ePO), as the default task, if my users are off-site and cannot access the repository server via VPN, then the default task then uses the McAfee website as the second update option (providing they have Internet access).

on your update task you just add a second option/location, first points to your repositories, in my case i only have one, in yours, you will likely list all your network repositories and then at the end add the McAfee site.  i have noted that sometimes, the McAfee update site does not always supply the daily incremental update files, and sometimes end up d/l the full DAT @ 100Mb.

if you need the sites details to add, let me know, they are normally included in the default tasks setup when the server is installed.

IainNIX:

If I understand you correctly, that is how my default policy is set already. My default policy's update repository lists are as follows:

1. site 01
2. site 02
...
...
10. site 10
11. McAfee Http

I'm certain the McAfee Http works because if I manually disable site 01-10 through the "edit repository list" option in the vse console, the update process works fine. (not something I can show the users how to do  though ^_^)

My issue is I'm guessing that McAfee tries to connect to site 01 through site 10 first instead of realising that the PC is not connected to the network and hence will not be able to contact site 01 - site 10.

Regards,

WA

yes unfortunately, it will only go to McAfee as a last resort.  unless you can set a different policy, where the systems are, so perhaps only 5 sites are listed, it will get to McAfee quicker than having to 'time-out' 10 company sites before getting to the external/internet one for McAfee.

perhaps some way to giving each site, a choice of 3 repositories, and then use McAfee.

IainNIX,

That is what I'm trying to avoid, having to set multiple policies. What I'm hoping for is that there is a way to make the agent realise that all the internal site is uncontactable and use the McAfee site immediately or in a short amount of time.

Regards,

WA

only way i think that can be done, is to edit the sitelist to only show two options, the local repository and McAfee (that's all i have setup), so the switch is done within 30 sec.
