The big problems with using symantec and mcAfee is that the file foundation each program lays is incredibly hard to remove completely.  I usually use restore points and reformatting on client machines because in the long term it's so much easier than trying to uninstall either of them.

I'd probably follow the steps in this link : http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007101615023748 and completely remove all traces of symantec, then I'd reinstall the mcafee (after uninstalling it and rebooting).

If it still doesn't work, I'd probably just switch to AVG or Kaspersky. (free versions)

hi pjvog

this is a server.

by: pjvogPosted on 2009-11-06 at 10:23:10ID: 25761609

And?

When you say server are you referring to the physical computer or that you were using this computer as an enterprise anti-virus manager (like this is the in-charge pc).  It's the same thing for the symantec, enterprise 10 was a real pain in the rear removing when we switched to TrendMicro, and following manual removal instructions was the only way to get TM working outside of a reformat.

Windows server? Remove ALL other anti-virus programs (but keep anti-spyware if applicable). Reboot.

Go purchase AVG for the server and never worry again.

I'm with dreamers, I take AVG or Kaspersky over Mcafee PLUS symantec anyday.

by: hopeleoniePosted on 2009-11-06 at 11:09:24ID: 25762091

i can't force the customer to buy avg. i agree with kaspersky but mad bad experience with avg.

by: dr34m3rsPosted on 2009-11-06 at 11:30:55ID: 25762300

AVG has come a long way. But I am sure Kaspersky would be fine. As long as it isn't what's currently installed.

Just explain to the customer they will be happy with either of those solutions. They wont be happy if they continue to waste their time with symantec and mcAfee.

by: hopeleoniePosted on 2009-11-07 at 12:27:40ID: 25767887

the head office from this company has bought mcAfee and symantec. the it manager is not having any right to change to another product! we are a 3. Party company and we have to support to solve this problem.

Are you able to open the "VirusScan Console"?

Please explain what you mean by "disabled" ?

"The problem is everything is working but McAfee is disabled. How can i solve this problem?"

What is "everything" and how is McAfee disabled?

Have you checked system services to make sure it's enabled (started) there?

by: dr34m3rsPosted on 2009-11-07 at 14:54:05ID: 25768467

If those options don't work, I would find a McAfee etnerprice removal tool, completely remove every trace of it, reboot, then do a reinstall again.

Something is just keeping it from working correctly, probably one of the programs own files conflicting with itself, or it's disabled somewhere. There doesn't seem to be another option. If all else fails, contact McAfee directly.

Good luck.

Right click on Mcafee Icon on Task bar and select Virus Scan console.
Go to Help, you will find repair installation and click on it
Now select from Repair installation restore all settings to installation default and click ok.
Now relax and wait for it to finish.
Enjoy.

dr34m3rs everything is working but McAfee is disabled mean "active scan guard" is disabled... i need a endpoint removal tool. you get it only from symantec :-(

chasbut will try thanx

by: dr34m3rsPosted on 2009-11-07 at 15:54:18ID: 25768692

This may be a silly question, but can't you just right click and select "enable"?

Symantec files are still installed? That would be something to consider as a possible cause.

Good luck with this issue, let me know once you found the problem. I'm curious what it was.

One important thing is to always run one antivirus and not have any other antivirus files on the system, so good thing the IT were able to remove the Symantec files.

by: engeltjePosted on 2009-11-09 at 03:56:00ID: 25775050

There are problems installing McAfee 8.7 over 8.5
Even when uninstalling 8.5 there are setting files left.
Best practice is to download and use McAfee 8.7i with incorporated patch 1.
You could use the Patch2 version too, but, this is a problem with sp2 on a x64 platform.

by: hopeleoniePosted on 2009-11-09 at 13:02:32ID: 31650684

excellent engeltje!

first you need cleanwipe from symantec! to get it you need to open a case.

i gave the others also some points. hope it's ok for you?

by: chasbutPosted on 2009-11-12 at 08:45:04ID: 25806173

Hi again hopeleonie. I experienced the same problem this week from a client computer using mcafee and guess what. When I downloaded malwarebyte which is free from malwarebytes.org and installed and fully scanned the computer for malwares. I did found a lot after that I tried to restore it like I told you earlier and it is working. You should try that.
