Question

How to clean Virus infected Hard disk from DOS

Asked by: mn210

Hi Experts,
I have Win 98 on my Hard Disk and it seems to be severly infected with viruses as some of the system files were corrupted which I was able to store using bootdisk. However, I got another serious problem as when I am  booting from Hard Disk, I am getting the message rthat the hard disk is not recognized and evn I tried thro' bootdisk of Win 98, but still I got the  warning message that harddisk is infected with viruse.
Is there any utility using which I can clean the Hard disk from DOS environment ?
Early response would be highly appreciated.

If you can get the file onto the harddrive, you can unzip it from a DOS prompt using this program

http://www.freebyte.com/fbzip/#cmd

which can be run from a DOS prompt to unzip the antivirus software, allowing you to then run the antivirus software from the DOS prompt.

hi mn210,

what type of bootup you are using?

create a normal system disk if possible, or boot-up using the windows CD, then go to DOS and try to run again.
F-prot for DOS is the best I've known so far...

anyway,
have you tried using windows 98 CD to repair the files? or try to take this opportunity to upgrade?

cheers,
Luis

Do you have another PC available? If yes then put the hard disk as secondary drive in this computer, start it with its Windows operating system and clean the hard disk from there.

Trend Micro DCS (damage cleanup services) are very powerful for that purpose: http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

How can I repair the files using win98 CD ?
Secondly, If I want to reinstall win 98 and keep all data intact , is it possible if I rename the old windows system folder to windowsold and install win98 in newly created windows system folder ? Actually, I  don't want to loose data at  any cost and I have no facility to backup data.
Thanks

is it possible if I rename the old windows system folder to windowsold

The above will crash your system!!!

Go to win98
Install the cd rom
Click on Windows Explorer
Goto the device where the cd rom is located
goto win98
click on set up
if you are offered to install Windows in another folder say NO!

your settings will not change.

gonzal13 is right: renaming 'windows' to 'windowsold' and doing a new installation is not a good idea. The hard disk is still infected with some kind of virus. Before you making a new installation you should clean the virus(es).

Trojan scan

Trojan horses are a huge security threat. A Trojan is a program that enters your computer undetected, giving the attacker who planted the Trojan unrestricted access to the data stored on your computer. Trojans can transmit credit card information and other confidential data in the background. Trojans are often not caught by virus scanning engines, because these are focused on viruses, not Trojans. Catching such threats would require the use of a Trojan scanner
