Disappearing "bad guys"

About once a year something messes with the computer clock,
usually setting it forward 6 to 24 hours at startup. I make the
correction and cleanup, and the problem waits another year to
happen again.

To protect my computer, I now display the date and time as
part of AUTOEXEC.BAT to be able to interrupt the problem
before any files are created with the wrong date/time.

If the internal battery was heading south, wouldn't the problem
be more frequent?

About every two years something has made changes to the
HOSTS file. Now I have the attributes set to SYSTEM and
READ ONLY. Again, my anti-virus programs turn up NOTHING.
Also, I have several anti-malware programs that I use and
they have turned up NOTHING.

A few months ago Pest Patrol did eliminate a BROWSER
HELPER OBJECT. Now I have WinPatrol running, too, and
it helped me get rid of one that was probably innocent.

SysInternals has an exotic program that will check for the
deep throat bugs, but the specifications indicate that it is
not suitable for Windows 98 SE.

A month or so ago I had some fairly frequent daily crashes,
but they went away by themselves, without me doing
anything about it. At the time I was trying to pin down a
General Protection Fault that turned out to be residual
garbage in the Registry from Outlook Express, which I no
longer use. The fault only occurred if I tried to do a
CONTROL PANEL --> ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS --> WINDOWS SETUP
so I don't think it had anything to do with the crashes.

For intermittent failures like this, I don't know how to
create a scenario that will force the bad guy to surface.

Any ideas?
