Upgrading Symantec Antivirus to Symantec Endpoint Protection

Asked by: aggieto

Hello,

I have a server 2003 this is my domain controller and I had Symantec Antivirus but when the renew was ready Symantec sugested me upgrade to Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Somebody helped me with this but the icon belongs to Symantec Antivirus on the taskbar never disappeared on the server.

On the clients PC appears the Endpoint Protection icon.
My concern is how can I know if Symantec Antivirus is still working and if my server is protected with Symantec Endpoint Protecction 100%.
Thanks

I would run the uninstall utility cleanwipe.exe on the Server in question, and reinstall Symantec Endpoint.  Truly the only way to really know - and most time efficient solution.

how does cleanwipe work? How can I get it?

Hi,

1) Download and run CCleaner to clear all temp files in your system

2) Download & run Symantec Nonav tool to clean any legacy & corrupted installations

http://downloads.jmlamb.net/symantec/NoNav2.49.exe

cleanwipe will clean the registry entries as well.

It reboots your computer and continues to run on startup and completes the registry cleanup.

Here are manual uninstall instructions if you prefer or if cleanwipe still doesn't remove everything:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/pfdocs/2002031914291648?Open

I had a recent situation where I had to:
1) Uninstall ALL Symantec products with Add/Remove Programs (including SEP)
2) Run cleanwipe
3) Manually uninstall what cleanwipe didn't (which suprised me how much was left)
4) Reinstall SEPM 11
5) Push SEP Client to server

Somebody said in Symantec Forums that older version of clean wipe might have effect on tcp ip.
Is this true?

by: xmachinePosted on 2009-06-15 at 13:40:06ID: 24632819

NoNAV (link mentioned in my original post) is from Symantec support for removing old/corrupted SAV installations. Already been tried many times with no problems.

aggieto:
Don't know about older versions. You can create a Symantec account and then e-mail support requesting the cleanwipe utility:
http://www.symantec.com/feedback/contactus.jsp
They will send you an e-mail opening the call and eventually an e-mail with the code to download the file. This will ensure you have the latest version.

I had no problems with cleanwipe.exe effecting my TCP/IP in my endeavors.  That's really all I can say.  I have also ran the Nonav for older versions with success as well.  Both will require a reboot though.

About CleanWipe
===============

CleanWipe is a tool that you can use to prepare or clean any supported Windows computer before you install Symantec Endpoint Protection. It is a self-extracting executable that unzips its batch files, utility programs, and data files to the Windows\Temp folder by default.

Use CleanWipe with caution. You should use CleanWipe as a last resort after all other means to prepare or clean a computer for Symantec Endpoint Protection installation have failed.

Running CleanWipe may result in MsiInstaller items being logged in the Windows Event Viewer Application log with the following descriptive text:

"Failed to connect to server. Error 0x800401F0."

These Event Viewer log entries are harmless and can be ignored.

In rare situations, running CleanWipe may cause a computer to crash with a blue screen. If this occurs, restart the computer and run CleanWipe again to solve the problem.

Running CleanWipe
=================

To run CleanWipe on 32-bit operating systems:
---------------------------------------------
1. Copy the CleanWipe folder to the target computer.

2. Open the CleanWipe folder and double-click the CleanWipe.exe file.

3. When you are prompted, browse to a location where you want the files to be copied and then click Start to extract the files.

If you click Start without selecting a location, the files are extracted to the Windows\Temp folder.

4. When you are asked if you want to run CleanWipe now, click Yes to run CleanWipe immediately; click no to run CleanWipe later.

5. As you run CleanWipe, you are prompted several times. It is recommended that you click Yes in response to all prompts.

If you choose to run CleanWipe later, browse to the CleanWipe\app folder and double-click the RunCleanWipe.bat batch file. Remember to click Yes in response to all prompts.

To run CleanWipe on 64-bit operating systems:
---------------------------------------------
1. Copy the CleanWipe folder to the target computer.

2. Open the CleanWipe folder and double-click the CleanWipe.exe file.

3. When you are prompted, browse to a location where you want the files to be copied and then click Start to extract the files.

If you click Start without selecting a location, the files are extracted to the Windows\Temp folder.

4. CleanWipe cannot automatically launch after you extract it on 64-bit operating systems, so change directory to the CleanWipe\app folder and double-click the RunCleanWipe.bat batch file.

Remember to click Yes in response to all prompts.

To run CleanWipe in silent mode:
--------------------------------

4. If you are asked if you want to run CleanWipe now, click No.

5. Open a command prompt and change directory to the CleanWipe\app folder.

6. Type the following command:

RunCleanWipe -silent

7. CleanWipe then uses its defaults to run without any user input.

Note: When running CleanWipe On the Microsoft Vista operating system you must run as administrator.

If you double-click on the SAV icon, what do you get?

Did you reboot your server uninstalling SAV?

Use Nonva to completely remove SAV related files/registry/icons..etc
