I've seen IRP Stack location errors due to application conflict of some kind which can be antiviruses or other applications fighting for a chunk of RAM. Could you send a HijackThis log of your system?

Another thing is, what do you see in the BSOD, does it actually give you a filename that is causing problems?

Oops, I forgot to tell you where to download HijackThis from:

BSOD logs are typically stored in c:\windows\minidumps. Could you please have a look and upload that as well here? Change the extension to .txt before uploading though.

here are a couple of the bsod logs.

by: warturtlePosted on 2009-08-03 at 10:11:21ID: 25006355

I've just seen a BSOD logs and here is the message that is coming out from it:

*** Fatal System Error: 0x%08lx.

Driver at fault:
*** STOP: 0x%08lX (0x%p,0x%p,0x%p,0x%p)

The logs don't point to what is causing the error exactly. Try opening a command window, then type:

sfc /scannow

This will need the Windows XP CD to work properly. This is the file checker utility which will prompt Windows to check all its files and replace any missing/corrupt files with fresh copies.

There's something else that would be helpful in this case: download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware(www.malwarebytes.org) and scan your computer with that. It is also possible that its a virus-related problem. Some viruses can register as system drivers and can cause similar problems, so we need to be sure that this is not the case here.

Hope it helps.

Ran malware bytes. it had no infections. the conflict comes when Trend Micro is installed and goes away when it is uninstalled. It only happens on 2 computers in the network (Dell 4300's). it is for engineers who have drafting software, but similar desktop configurations do not have the problem at all.

some other consistensies are that if the computer is not on a network, it is stable, if it logs on to the netowrk, either wired or wireless, it gives the BSOD. the BSOD is always the irp stack size message as above.

Can you try running ComboFix on one of your PCs and send me the log? It can be downloaded from:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please read the instructions carefully before running it. All computer security products must be disabled before running it, otherwise ComboFix may not run. After ComboFix creates a log, please send me the log and re-enable the security programs again and scan again with MalwareBytes once.

thanks for your help. I don't think it's due to malware though, I think it has to do with the Trend Micro software not compatable with the software on this particular model of Dell. I'll pass this to the network security person. He's the one who likes the Trend Micro. There were no other similar problems in the network on any other model of Dell and it only occurs after installing and update to Trend Micro office 10. After removing it, the computer works fine and shows no evidence of a virus. Plus the network security guy won't let me have access to combo fix.
