So if I update my old one instead of renewing the subscription then it will not support any updates after the new release is in the market?

Browse All TopicsHello guys,
I was just wondering that if I buy one Norton Antivirus 2009 right now then do I have to buy a new one on 2010 or if I keep my 2009 updated then it would have the latest definitions like 2010?
If I don't have to buy a new one every year and as far as I keep my old antivirus updated then it is OK then why Norton comes with new Antivirus versions every year?

Renewing subscriptions ensures that you get the latest virus definitions. cheap alternative you dont have to purchase the av again you will have get a key then it will be associated with an account and you are good for another year. On the downside its that you are left with the old antivirus wich means that you might not be able to take advantage of features of new realease. some vendors offfer packages for automatic upgrade if one becomes avialable (ask the verndor)
Upgrading to a new build upgrades to the latests version of the av plus continues to download virus definitions for whatever package you purchase (1 year subscription 2 year subscription) plus whatever you features come with the new antivirus.
Free antivirus such as avg and avast will allow you to upgrade to a new build plus continue to download new updates all for free. And also they have a pro version if you want more features.
I would not purchase Norton - it's a resource hog that has a nasty tendency to fail when you need it most.
I simply don't trust free products. If your security is worth nothing to you, get the free stuff. If you CARE about your security, go buy a product.
That said, MOST products nowadays are cr*p. Used to be they caught 99% of what was out there. Then they said "look! We can make up a separate category and call it spyware/adware/trojans (or perhaps malicious software) and tell people they need another product to protect against these!" but the problem is the line between spyware/adware/trojans/etc
Sorry... I've gotten very cynical seeing how "effective" these things are in recent years.

You don't have to BUY a new AV every year, but you most likely have to renew (buy) a subscription for your "old" version. There are several free alternatives that are as good if not better than the pay to play guys.
