Question

Does McAfee 10 slow down a PC

Asked by: anushahanna

We just put McAfee Total Protection 2010 on a new Dell optiplex, but after putting the AV app, outlook and office application are really slow (I is thinking a lot before responding).

Is it because McAfee 10 is a very heavy software?

Have you experience anything like that?

McAfee and Symantec are notorious for slowing down machines.  We're currently testing Vipre.

Yes,

Norton, Mcafee and Symantec are all known anti viruses for slowing down computers and clashing with other programs /software.
They dont even have particularly good virus detection rates as tested in thousands of computer magazine ect.

I would reccomend that you use Kaspersk: www.Kaspersky.co.uk

We had a customer who got infected by a really bad virus and they all had mcafee installed on 300 of their machines, we then had to shutdown infected machines for 2 days to stop spreading of the virus and used kaspersky on each computer to clean it up.

It also has good software (admin kit) which can be put on your server(s) so you can push out a fresh install of kaspersky and also keep track of updates and which computer have it installed.

This is the best option.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

RatBoy1,
Is the kaspersky software for client different than for server? Can you provide their names?

2PiFL, have you had any stories with vipre?

by: RatBoy1Posted on 2009-11-04 at 05:30:56ID: 25739051

It is the same install, when you install the Kaspersky software, you can choose whether you want to install the admin kit, or client ect. Kaspersky technical support can assist you with setup on this free of charge if you make a purchase  / deal. They are also really flexible and have a good response time.
You can even get a trainning course to learn about this.

What do you mean by "can you provide their names" ?

Let me know if you need anything else.

by: anushahannaPosted on 2009-11-04 at 05:33:49ID: 25739074

I meant the product name- are you referring to 'Kaspersky Internet Security 2010'?

by: anushahannaPosted on 2009-11-04 at 05:45:07ID: 25739182

Would Mcafee Enterprise software be different effect than the McAfee Total Protection 2010?

by: RatBoy1Posted on 2009-11-04 at 05:48:32ID: 25739217

Oh, ok.

For Home use, you can use:
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/kaspersky_internet_security

For Business / comercial use:
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/small-office-security

OR

http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/enterprise_space_security

It depends on what you need it for (1 comptuer, 10 computers or 500).

They all support admin kit, virus detection ect.

You can see the benifits here:
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/open-space-security

Let me know if there is anything else you need.

by: 2PiFLPosted on 2009-11-04 at 05:50:26ID: 25739250

anushahanna,

I haven't heard anything about Vipre - I got a phone call one day with a free trial offer so I took it.  I have it loaded on an old laptop and there are no performance issues at all - even during a full system scan.

by: RatBoy1Posted on 2009-11-04 at 05:50:47ID: 25739255

I think you would be better off with Kaspersky but Mcafee enterprise still causes a few problems but is alot better than the total protection.

by: anushahannaPosted on 2009-11-04 at 11:22:00ID: 25742857

RatBoy1
It is for 12 computers. Do you recommend the 'small office security' one or the 'kaspersky internet security' one?

by: RatBoy1Posted on 2009-11-05 at 01:08:25ID: 25747744

If you have just 12 computers with no exchange server, or file servers / domain controllers (workgroup) I would reccomend : http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/work_space_security

If you have exchange server, file server, domain controller, terminal server/ citrix, I would reccomend: http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/enterprise_space_security

If you are looking for a reseller, I can point you in the direction of one (the company I used to work for which was a IT specialist company who is partly a reseller for Kaspersky.

by: anushahannaPosted on 2009-11-05 at 05:26:21ID: 25749133

RatBoy1
Yes, we have SBS2003.
Is that reseller in USA?

and what version of Kaspersky Business Space Security are you using?(i see v6 online).

Thanks

by: RatBoy1Posted on 2009-11-05 at 06:09:46ID: 25749576

That should be fine.

You should get: http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/enterprise_space_security

And probably the small business version
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/store?blocknum2=2

It is a UK based reseller. But you should be able to order straight from Kaspersky for the same price (resellers get it for a discount but they help provide support on setup ect and resell it for the normal price).

If you ring up Kaspersky, they should be flexible on quotes / prices / discounts ect.

I would get Enterprise and the latest version of Kaspersky which is most probably v6.

Thanks

by: RatBoy1Posted on 2009-11-05 at 06:16:48ID: 25749643

Actually I think there are new versions (version 2010 or version 7).

When you ring up Kaspersky,  you should be able to say I want the most upto date version (ask for a quote) and they will calculate one based on the amount of computers you have and other eqipment like file servers / dcs.

by: RatBoy1Posted on 2009-11-05 at 06:18:34ID: 25749664

At my last company, they was using version 6.
But whether they have upgraded or not I dont know (which was about 4 months ago) and they have not had any virus problems at all.

by: RatBoy1Posted on 2009-11-05 at 06:20:24ID: 25749688

You can even get a trial version of it to see whether your happy with it. Then simply upgrade.

RatBoy1
More than catching virus, I am more keen that is is 'light' on slower/older systems... In your experience, did Kaspersky do well on older systems also?

by: RatBoy1Posted on 2009-11-06 at 06:04:33ID: 25759144

Yes, it was awsome. Did not really slow down the machines, even while scanning.
The sort of machines used for one customer was really low spec and still managed to work fine.
This is probably one of the lightest software antiviruses that you can put on a machine.
