The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Rtvscan.exe hogging cpu usage on multiple computers...

Tags: cpu, symantec, fix
Hello,

My client is using Symanetc AV, version 10.0.2.  There are about 150 computers on the network.  Multiple users are currently experiencing sluggish behavior when opening applications, browsing the internet, etc.  I noticed that rtvscan.exe is using more than half of the cpu on all of these computers.  I know that this has something to do with Symantec AV's real time scanner but I don't know how to fix it.  Also, would the fix be applied on a server or client level?  Please advise.

Thanks!

My first thought is that there's likely a bug in version 10.0.2 that is causing the high proc usage.  SAV is now up to version 10.1.7.7000 and I would upgrade to it in order to avoid this possible flaw, as well as numerous others.

Another point that I think is relevant is that version 10.0.2 has a security flaw in it that was disclosed in 2006:  http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/security/Content/2006.05.25.html.  In order to avoid the flaw, I would upgrade to at least a non-affected version.  While you're at it, though, you might as well go to the current version to avoid non-security related application bugs.

@ snoopfrogg - that is really great advice.

To be honest though, my first thought with any Symantec problem is to try to talk the client into replacing it.

My experience with Symantec has not just been all of the operational problems (the RTVscan processor hog is very common), but the constant failure of the Symantec Enterprise application to effectively 'Push' updates to all of the client computers.

In addition to the security flaw you mention, Symantec/Norton has been so late to publish DAT files for new threats that entire domains have been destroyed - when protection was readily available from all the other major AV companies.

I survived through two different Virus Storms (Melissa and NIMDA) with Symantec only by shutting down the gateway.

If the Asker is considering upgrading to Endpoint, he would do well to search EE and other forums for all of the problems that exist for that product as well.

No kidding.  Lately, I've been having enough issues with SAV that have left me wondering whether I need to be doing the same.  I've had enough issues with other products, though, that the pain of migrating to another app keeps me on SAV.

@ snoop - I pulled SAV out of so many networks that they started shipping me out to different bases to help. My replacement choice back then was always McAfee/ePO because McAfee would send Field Engineers on-site (free) to do the initial install. ePO was a dream to operate on some of the really huge networks.

One of the smart guys (programmers) figured out how to use PSEXEC in combination with different flavors of NoNav and we were able to darn near automate the whole process of removing Symantec. At least for about 80% of the boxes - then we had to manually beat on the rest to get rid of it.

I helped a guy install Endpoint on about 30 boxes last month and the workstation install went (mostly) OK, but he is still trying to get the server piece to work.

@amerghafari - jump on in here anytime. We're just chatting about common problems as we wait for your response.

To free up the additional memory and speed up applications. I just disable the Service. Symantec's only fix is for us to purchase an upgrade!
