The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to configure Norton Internet Security to allow File and Printer Sharing?

Tags: Symantec/Norton, Norton Internet Security, 2007, Blocking File and Printer Sharing on Workgroup Network
I have a large church for a customer. They currently have about ten PCs running Windows XP and they are all doing File and Printer Sharing via a Workgroup named "Workgroup". All of these machines are currently untilizing Norton/Symantec Internet Security and everything is working as it should. Theya er able to share files and printers throughout the Workgroup. They recently replaced three existing desktops with three laptops which also have Norton Internet Security. So far I made sure that each of the new laptops is a member of the Workgroup; I have also run the File and Printer Sharing Wizard on each new laptop; and I have also enabled sharing on each C drive and the "My Docs" folder on the C drive.

Of course I canot yet see any otehr machines on the workgroup, but, I can surf the net on each amchine.

How does one configure Norton Internet Security to allow File and printer Sharing across a Workgroup network? What else should I check?

Thank you so very much! The church urgently needs to get this going, therefore, I am also in an urgent need.

Hi. are the laptops running the dreaded Vista by any chance? Or are the laptops using wireless and the other computers are wired? There are lots of reasons file sharing can fail ; my network for example wont allow wireless to share with wired computers (by design ; for simple security)

If you can let me know the operating systems of the machines, if they are wired/wireless, and your brand of router/hub/network I'll try to help

thanks,Rob

Hi Mike,
You can also disable the NIS (completely, but temporarily) on one of those new computers and see if that makes a difference.

Re-enable it as soon as your test is complete.

These pages and many other forums are inundated with problems with NIS (and many other) 'suite' type programs.

If you're using a router w/firewall coming from your Internet Access Point (modem?), you don't need the software firewalls running - just your Windows firewall will be fine.

At the point that the NIS license expires, I strongly encourage you to get some advice on some different malware protection. Something for AV and something else for anti-spyware. You don't need anything else running on the local computer.

IF disabling NIS gets you connected again, turn off the Firewall piece for those computers and you should be good to go.

Post back when you can.

There is also a '10 license' maximum for file-sharing in a work group - so when you say 'about ten PC's', keep that in mind.

Additional Information:

1. All computers are using Windows XP Home
2. All computers are Dell
3. The Router and 16 port switch are both Linksys devices
4. The three laptops are wireless
5. All other machines are wired
6. We may be over the ten count, I will have to check. However, they told me that they were able to do this with the old desktops they had before the new, wireless, laptops.

7. The idea of deleteing NIS from every machine is absolutely a good one and this has always been my solution to this problem prior to this customer. However, I approached this solution with the customer yesterday and they want to keep NIS if they can as they feel exposed by the multitude of users on their machines each Sunday. Go figure.

FYI, Thanks!

Thanks for the additional info.

Did you try the temporary disabling of NIS to check your sharing capability?
The first priority is to identify the actual problem.

Also, do the laptops 'share' if you connect them with ethernet cable vice wireless?

Lots of questions, I know.

Thanks for the quick response.

Another suggestion - when the time comes - is to start buying XP Pro machines (and not any flavor of Vista - yet).

Regarding the customer's insistence on NIS - I've had the same problem many times over. So many folks know that name and still think it is a good product.

If you can figure out a tactful way to bring them around to your way of thinking, please let me know.

So far, I have about 50% success with "My way or the highway."

:)
