Recent installation of Norton Antivirus 2008 requires repeated activation

I installed Norton Antivirus 2008 and have activated the software.  Now periodically, the Protection Center notifies me the Virus Protection is at risk and activation is required.  I click connect to Fix Now. The activation fails, "an error has occured during your activationcted, click next... opens Norton antivirus Help and Support window,  and opens up a window with nowhere to go.  I can access the Internet and Norton/Symantec's site successfully.  No available software updates.  Start Free Trial
