Hi, I have a Windows 2000 server, SP4 which is running Symantec AntiVirus Corporate edition version 8.1 Recently the definition files have stopped updating and upon further examination the Symantec AntiVirus service will not start, it gives the following error - Could not start the Antivirus Server service on local computer. Error 10: the environment is incorrect.
I have downloaded the intelligent updater and installed the update without success. I have also uninstalled and the full product (and removed all registry entries & folders as indicated on the manual removal instruction). However now on the re-install the Symantec AntiVirus Server service will not start. (same error as detailed above - Error 10). It also will not install the AV server software as all is rolled back out automatically because it cant start the AV Server Service.
I know that its not a definitions problem due to there being no definitions as its a clean install. The other error that appears in the event logs is:
Product: Symantec AntiVirus Server -- Error 1920.Service Symantec AntiVirus Server (Norton AntiVirus Server) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
All the security settings on the folders indicated by symantec are correct, so I'm now at a loss of what to do next.
In my experience, all of the Enterprise AV solutions I have used recommend creating a separate Domain Account to manage the AV function. There are normally specific 'rights' required for that account to function properly. My shortcut was to simply give that account full "Domain Administrator" privs - thus guaranteeing that it would have all the rights it needed.
jimmymcp02, It doesn't surprise me that Symantec has done that, but do you have a link with more information? I wandered around their website, but couldn't find any information (no surprise).
jimmymcp02, Thanks for the details. It really pisses me off for that kind of thing to happen. It is one thing to quit actively supporting an older product for trouble-shooting/patches and that kind of thing - but rendering it inoperable it really a cheap trick by Symantec.
Yes the product is no longer supported but virus definitions are still available provided you have a valid subscription. I'm still downloading currently virus definitions each week on all the network workstations. Still have the an issue with AV on the Server. I've uninstalled it completely and tried a re-install. The symantec admin console installs ok, but still have the same problem when installing AV on the Server. It fails with: Could not start the Antivirus Server service on local computer. Error 10: the environment is incorrect.
bertster - Have you created the Service Account that I mentioned before? If you are running this as a 'Service', what are your settings -- "System" or "Account and Password"?
