Question

How to schedule updates in Symantec 10 Corporate

Asked by: menreeq

I want to configure our Symantec Corp 10 so that the clients only update from the parent server and the parent server only updates once a day in the middle of the night.  However, I am confused where exactly I should configure this.  I have created a client group and associated my workstations with that client group.  Do I specify that they should update fromt the parent server by:

1.  right click the parent server, all tasks, symantec antivirus, virus definition manager
2. right click the client folder, all tasks, symantec antivirus, virus definition manager

1 or 2....or both?

What I usually do is..

I go to the server then

Go to start ---> Program Files ---> Symantec Client Security

then

File --> Scheduled Updates..

It would look something like this:  (see attached print screen)

I hope this helps

I would also like to add to this statement:

"I want to configure our Symantec Corp 10 so that the clients only update from the parent server."

If you installed SAV clients in "Manage" mode this should address your concern.

thanks for the suggestion but isn't that how you configure a sole machine, i am trying to configure all machines not just one.

by: chatxfalconPosted on 2009-06-17 at 10:35:44ID: 24650647

You are settings the update schedule from the Parent Server. Then the client will just check or verify the updates from PARENT SERVER the moment they check-in.

i don't think it works that way, but thanks for trying to help.  Anyone else?

You might want to reconsider trying.

One of the network I'm handling got more than 500 computers with 2 Parent Server.

2 versions running Version 10.1 and Version 10.2 (for vista users)

chatxfalcon, i appreciate you trying to help. However, I don't think what you are suggesting is the correct way to do this.  Perhaps someone will prove me wrong and you right, or they will teach us both something about managing updates in symantec.  anyone else have thoughts on this?

by: jimmymcp02Posted on 2009-06-18 at 10:51:03ID: 24659970

menreeq.

what chatxfalcon suggested is correct.

Assuming all the machines are part of the same parent server then you need to open symantec system console then go to the parent server and go to virus definitions manager. there you can set up how the clients retrieve

There you will be able to set the virus definition interval for server and and the clients and the server.

If you have multiple groups then you will need to tailor each group to your liking.

Note its better if you have groups and schedule the virus defs to be retrieved at different times to avoid to much network traffic

I wonder how many thoughts/suggestions you require?
