Question

MS RPCSS Attack detected

Asked by: vinodmore

I have Windows XP SP3 with all windows updates. And Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 installed.
After every one hour I get this message balloon saying MS RPCSS Attack detected, or MS RPCSS  BO detection, what does that means ??

Is system infected with some kind of malware?? I have scanned system thoroughly.
Is this problem cause Conficker virus?

It means that someone is trying to bang on your machine from out on the net to take advantage of a well known DCOM vulnerability; Symantic is telling you that they've detected the attempted attack, and thwarted it.  It doesn't mean your machine is infected.

I would be kind of surprised if a machine behind a router was getting hit with this, though; is your machine connected directly to the internet, or is it behind  a router?

@ akahan
Oh wait, also my machine is Natted with public ip so i can access it from home.
Is it causing the issue?
Shall i change local ip to something else??

BTW
We have Cyberoam UTM box instead of router, its router cum firewall. and natting is done on it.

My system completely patched with latest hot fixes.

Where can i download DCOM vulnerability patch? Patch name ? I have SP3 installed

You probably ARE patched. All that Symantec is telling you is that someone is attempting an attack. If you're patched, you have nothing to worry about.
