Question

symatenc liveupdate "freezes" my machine

Asked by: menreeq

We are using Symantec Corporate AV 10.2.  We have one windows XP machine SP3 that freezes when Symantec LiveUpdate runs.  I can still ping the machine, move the mouse but that's about it.  this happens every night when LiveUpdate runs and it's always the last entry in the system log.  The entry is:

"The LiveUpdate service entered the stopped state."

I have to reset the machine to get it back up.

I have already formatted the HD and reinstalled the OS and the very same issue occurs.  I removed symantec and installed NOD32 for a week and it never froze.  Then I removed NOD32 installed Symantec and the very first night it froze.

Any ideas?

could you install liveupdate for this client

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffice/products/lu/lu/files.html

go the live update 3.3 section. Once you install it test and post back.

liveupdate is already installed on the workstation, do you think this is a newer version?

go to add/move programs the look for liveupdate the click on it and you will see a link that says click here for more information. Then you will see the version. I would recommend re-install it live update using the link i provided. Test and post back

Thanks Jimmymcp02, the pc in question had version 3.2, i just upgraded it to 3.3 and restarted the computer.  Now we just wait and see.  If it does not freeze the computer by Monday then i will aware you the point and close this issue.  Thanks for the help and have a nice weekend.

by: menreeqPosted on 2009-10-10 at 08:37:17ID: 25542640

unfortunately upgrading to 3.3 did not resolve the issue.  The computer froze again after running LiveUpdate.  What's strange is if I run LiveUpdate manually it does not freeze but only when it's run per the daily scheduled LiveUpdate.

Any other ideas?

this is strange.

How are you deploying the client? Through a website, pushed from symantec system console or do you browse to the folder?

You mentioned 10.2 which is a supplement for vista. if you open the antivirus and look under program version which version number do you have installed.

It should be something like 10.1.XXXx if you have something with a 10.2 then you managed to installed the vista supplement on that client and that will cause a lot of errors.

by: menreeqPosted on 2009-10-12 at 09:23:39ID: 25552530

i am pushing it out through the symantec system console, the pc in question is running 10.1.8

by: jimmymcp02Posted on 2009-10-12 at 09:45:12ID: 25552748

ok lets try the following remove the client using cleanwipe download it from here http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Internet_Email/Anti-Virus/Symantec/Q_24355519.html

You will have to rename the file from .txt to .exe

Then run it on the xp computer that is having problems read all the prompts make sure live update is removed as part of your choices.

Now re-install the client but dont use the system console to deploy the client. Instead navigate to the folder for the client install and launch the set up manually (the folder should be something like this \\yourserver\c$\Program Files\Symantec\SAV\CLT-INST\WIN32. Verify that live update works manually and then set up a schedule live update (not from your server but from symantec). post results. if success then create a new group and make it inherit the settings from its parents drag the xp client and test the live update.

Now post all your results.

Thanks

jimmymcp02, thanks for the suggestion.  Do you know if i need liveupdate installed if i configure the client to update from the parent server?  I have configured it to update from the parent server and unchecked it from running liveupdate.  I wonder if i can then just uninstall liveupdate from the client and leave it be.  what do you think?

by: jimmymcp02Posted on 2009-10-13 at 06:36:06ID: 25559689

live update is automatically installed when you deploy sav to the client. You dont need to install it again. but you can reinstall a higher version to the client if needed.

What you can do is create a new group copy the settings from a group that you know its woking and drag 3 clients and see if the behave the same.

Also other things to consider if your sav corp server is a XP OS you are limited to 10 connections.

by: menreeqPosted on 2009-10-13 at 11:00:15ID: 25562460

that worked.  I removed live update and the system still updates the def's from the server.  and with liveupdate gone the computer no longer freezes.  Thanks for the help.
