Scratch the ads part, I was thinking of WhenU, a similar program http://www.whenu.com/
Serv-U is composed of two separate parts, the Engine and the user interface. The Serv-U Engine or Daemon is the heart of Serv-U. It does all the work of serving FTP commands from FTP clients. It is the software that performs all file transfers. The Serv-U Administrator program is the way you interact with the Serv-U Engine.
The Serv-U engine is detected as high risk by Spyware Doctor because it is considered so IF installed without the user knowledge, however since this is not the case I would ignore Spyway Doctor, and continue to use it, but wouldnt remove any componants as it is almost certain to stop working.

I know it has been months but I found this page via search and so might someone else...
Rhino Software's excellent Serv-U program is NOT adware, malware, or spyware. Not at all. It is an FTP server, though, and it DOES have a "silent" background process that DOES open a port... However, that doesn't make it an "infection", nor does it really "allow attackers to gain access and control over the infected machine". It could be bad to have ANY FTP server installed without your knowledge, but if you knowingly installed Serv-U, there is nothing to worry about. Spyware Doctor could flag any FTP sever as an "infection", just the same as it did (and still does, in version 5.5, here in February 2008) with Serv-U.

Its because ServU delivers ads to your pc and is classed as adware, its not really dangerous, so you can leave it there. In some cases free software will stop working if the adware designed to ship with it is removed. It is to protect their investment as they use the adware to pay for the software in effect, making it free for you
