what causes bit*.tmp files to be generated into documents and settings\username\local settings\temp?

what causes bit*.tmp files to be generated into documents and settings\username\local settings\temp?
I suspect some kind of virus, trojan or spyware. We have McAffee running and Spyware Doctor found a bunch of things which we deleted. Still we are getting many many BIT***.TMP such as BIT26E.TMP created. Is this something to be worried about?

I would suggest downloading Hijackthis and running a scan on your computer. you can also take a look at this other solved issue on EE.

How many such files are there, and how long do they stay there? What are their sizes?

As a guess, I would think it is the the MS BITS service generating these files, or some 3rd-party application that uses BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) to download updates and other information.

The best tool for checking what program might be using/creating those files is probably Process Explorer:
