Question

Is PC Tools - "Spyware Doctor" a malware?

Asked by: samuelsiegel

I previously installed PC TOOLS "Spyware Doctor" on my computer, and I soon began getting the following message (when attempting to open Spyware Doctor):

pctsGui.exe - Unable to Locate Component:
"This application has failed to start because sdinfo.sdp was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I un-installed Spyware Doctor, and then re-installed it again after I restarted my computer, and I soon found that my AV (which is eEye Blink Personal) discovered a "malware application".  The following information is given to me by Blink Personal:

Virus name: "Spybot.CTBH".
Item found: C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\is-5DE5S.tmp

As you can see, the reason I'm receiving that error from the get-go is for some reason Blink Personal detects a malware and it's found in the Program Files of Spyware Doctor.  I am assuming that Blink Personal mayyyy be too sensitive with what it detects, but I am really not sure.  I really like Spyware Doctor a lot and it seems to catch a LOT of stuff that other Spyware programs don't catch, so I really would like to keep using it, if at all that's possible...

Also, if Blink Personal is just detecting that one file as malware, and it ISN'T a malware, is there any way I can take the sensitivity of Blink Personal so it wont be so harsh on what it detects as bad from good?

Hello samuelsiegel,

Spyware Doctor is not Malware, it was included in the Google Pack for a while.

Unfortunately I cannot help  you with tweaking Blink Antivirus to let you install this program, but at least you now know that Spyware Doctor is OK to use.

You may also like to look at AdAware as that is a free anti-spyware program.

Regards,

Robmonster

I agree with Robmonster...Spyware Doctor is NOT malware. I'm using it on my own PC and think it is probably one of the top two or three antispyware programs. My guess is that Blink either is being too sensitive or, if it has a spyware component running both of them may be causing an issue.  This probably has nothing to do with it, but what version of SD are you running?

by: samuelsiegelPosted on 2008-05-27 at 06:10:05ID: 21651536

That's what I thought about about SD.  I knew it wasn't a malware since I downloaded straight from the site and bought it there, and my guess is Blink is being wayyyy sensitive!

The version of SD I'm running is 5.5, I believe that's the current up to date one.

by: samuelsiegelPosted on 2008-05-27 at 06:11:30ID: 21651547

I'm also guessing I need to figure out how to set Blink AV correctly so I don't keep having this problem because I've reinstalled and uninstalled SD nearly 3 times and I keep getting that darn error

by: jhyieslaPosted on 2008-05-27 at 07:15:49ID: 21652052

Yes SD 5.5. is the latest and seems to be fairly stable.  Version 5 was a mess.

I"d neve r heard of Blink and normally I would have suggested using a more established product, but I did a little research this morning and it appears that blink is getting some good press.  Still nothing is perfect and the Blink folks should be able to help address this issue.

by: samuelsiegelPosted on 2008-05-27 at 15:05:32ID: 21656161

I believe I solved the problem by simply going into Blink and having to forcefully accept those that "item" that Blink thought was a malware.  I had to go and exclude it from the AV/Spyware application that is built-into Blink.  I guess it works fine now with no problems, but it was a doozy trying to figure it out.  Thanks guys for your help.

Aren't you able to adjust the security level ? like how in most of the anti virus programs from High to medium....
If you couldn't find that then you surely have an exclusion option that you can exclude Spyware Doctor folderfrom being monitored or scanned by your Antivirus....

In case not then you will probably have to give up on one of those 2 products and try another one instead.
You could try bit defender v 10 ... It's free.
Avast as well is free.

Good luck with your choice.

DAMN I Was just typing THAT..... LOL
Good luck again.

You might still want to check with the Blink folk. If there is some underlying problem, you'll have this again and then always have to wonder if the alert is real or not.
