There's no other fix for it, except that software that you mentioned. You might what to try reinstalling windows but that might not work on getting your files back. I don't think it's a simple rename of the file, it could be actually changing the properties of it. Looks like you'll have to fork over the $29 though. Try contacting them for a discount code.
