Question

Windows Enterprise Suite Virus Changed Permission on HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Asked by: ingala

Unable to fully remove Windows Enterprise Suite Virus.  I have performed a scan with Malwarebytes program and it detected and claimed to have successfully removed the virus. Everytime I run ComboFix it still detects Windows Enterprise Suite Scanners running.  AVG also detects them as running when I try to install it.  The AVG install error is telling me that it does not have permission to write to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows to complete the install.  I tried to change permissions and take ownership of that key and have been unable. I have run all virus programs in safe mode and I have also performed a boot time scan with Avast as well as 5 different Boot time scans using the Geek Squad CD as well.  Have done manual removal including all registry entries I could find and files.  Nothing suspicious in Hijack This or msconfig start up.  Also checked registry for HKUSER and HKLM RUN keys.  When in regular windows mode, the computer performs fine however this is preventing me from installing new antivirus as well as I don't want to give it back to person knowing there is still some kind of virus on it.  Please adivse.

Is reformatting out of the question?  How about using a restore point?  Have you tried running Hijackthis and looking for the files in use, or doing a "Service removal on reboot" using hijackthis misc tools?  Next I'd run sfc /scannow from cmdline, or do a windows repair installation to try and replace the access that was changed.

Good Luck.

i definaltely can't do a restore but I am running the sfc /scannow (great function.. Thanks)  I'll let you know how I make out.  The Hijack this came up dry.  All of the running processes in task manager (all users selected) are normal.  There are a few SVCHOST ones that I can't tell what they are.

Try to do system restore to date before computer was infected and before you connect to internet try to install spybot with teamer enabled. Download it before system restore or from other machine. It will prevent to change system/registry settings as virus was desgined to repair itself.
Then scan coputer with various antimalware (malwarebytes, spybot,...) and manually allow/deny changes to registry.

They didn't have system restore on so the only one I have is from today (unless the virus modified it) I did do a full scan with spybot but not sure what teamer is.  do you mean Tea Timer?  If so I'll try it.

Yes, I ment resident TeaTimer. Sorry typo.

It looks like the SFC function repaired the reg keys enough where I was able to load Avast and Spybot.  A few additional acans later and nothing is coming up so I guess I can kick this PC out of the nest and give it back to it's owner.  Thanks..
