Hi,
I'm currently thinking about deploying an Instant Messenger throughout the company.
Some people are using Skype already (in text mode, not VoIP) but I'm reluctant about deploying it since :
- It uses a lot of memory even when idle and I have many aging PCs that can't be renewed this year for budgetary reasons.
- It isn't really network friendly (your connection and bandwidth is used as a relay for other people's communications)
- Even in the Corporate edition, it isn't centrally and/or easily manageable (configuration can not be scripted easily and isn't in registry but just in XML files so GPO can't be created for it).
The good part is that the communication is encrypted and supports VoIP which we may want to use from time to time (but it isn't really necessary) and that it is free.
Do you know a good Instant Messenger (preferably free) that hasn't the cons that Skype has and is suitable for use in the corporate environment ?
Windows Live is too childish and annoying and doesn't seem really lighter.
Miranda isn't too bad but it isn't encrypted and does not seem to be much more manageable.
Thanks a lot for your advices.
