i know in the newer versions they have included that feature.

Oh, my bad. I thought you were asking about live conversation. You want to enable the chat history feature. Info on doing that is here, although you may need to upgrade to Windows Live Messenger to do this:

No. It is too old. Everything that I have seen says that Windows Messenger that comes with Windows XP (4.7) does not support this.

If you want you can try updating to to 5.1 and see if it has Chat History support:

Or you can remove it and use Windows Live Messenger instead:
