smiley in java chat jtextarea

I have small chat application in java with jtextarea to take input.

How do i insert smiley when someone type :)  or :(  ?  There is no option to convert character to image in jtextarea? I have tried  converting it to other character and its working.. But i need smiley image when anyone type :)  or :(  etc..

Any help appreciated.. thanks in advance

No, you'll need to use a JEditorPane for that.
A JTextArea only displays plain text.

u need to use a jeditorpane as i already mentioned.
please post how u solved it with a jtextarea
