importing your custom emoticons and importing Yahoo's may be the same.
Here are instructions........maybe you've tried it?

Tags: custom emoticons, emoticons for msn messenger, msn emoticons, msn messenger, msn smiley, msn smilies, Noteworthy, Tech News, Tips n Tricks, yahoo emoticons, yahoo messenger.
This is a long overdue post  .. I was busy with CCNA and some other things so I could post it earlier.. Anyways, Here it is.
Being a Yahoo Messenger user for years, I am used to Yahoo Messenger emoticons. And after some of my friends decided to shift to MSN messenger, I had to become a regular on MSN Messenger too .. But I missed Yahoos emoticons. And add to it that MSN Messengers emoticon looks ugly to me. So I decided to utilize MSN Messengers Custom Emoticon feature to add Yahoo emoticons to MSN Messenger. I have released it as a custom emoticon pack, and if you want to import Yahoo emoticons to MSN Messenger, manually copy and paste custom emoticons to your messenger folder
Method: Manual Copy Paste:
Download and extract the archive. You will get a folder called CustomEmoticons with around 80 .dat files. Right Click on the folder and select Copy.
Now in your Windows drive ( C: on most systems), navigate to Application Data folder. For ex: C:\Document & Settings \ YourUsernameOnTheComputer \Application Data\ Microsoft\ MSN Messenger\ ARandomNumberString\.
There may be more than one folders in your MSN Messenger directory if you have multiple MSN IDs on the same computer. You have to open the folder which corresponds to the ID that you wanna have Yahoo Emoticons.
Paste the CustomEmoticons folder here that you downloaded.
Run MSN Messenger ..  .. You have YMSN Emoticons as your custom emoticons.

and another:
O.K... I gather you want to save emoticons. Go to run, then type %appdata%
then go to Microsoft, MSN Messenger, you should see some account numbers, find out which is yours, then go to it, then go to CustomEmoticons, and they will be in .DAT files, you can just change the extension to .GIF.
i don't know if those are gif images.. there is a program that allows you to save your msn messenger images called icon backup, its at http://www.iconbackup.com.. you can manage and save your icons in bulk or individually with this tool.

Is any of that what you are looking for?

Sorry No help there.
I'm working with Live Messenger & I know how to save the gifs.
My problem is just with the pinning that each time I reset the PC it loses the custom pinning.
I've seen this question from 3 years ago on the internet, but haven't seen the answer!

emoticons needs to be saved and imported as animated .gif images. MSN only supports images up to 50x50 pixels. Its pretty easy to save a static image as a .gif image and then import it but as soon as you want to create animated emoticons that gets very tricky. If you dont know how to use graphic design applications I would suggest it might be too hard.

You can get instructions on importing images into MSN Messenger from http://messenger.msn.com/Help/LearnMore....

........the above gives instructions on importing which you know. Maybe MSN or Microsoft tech support can tell you why they do not stay pinned. I am not finding much info.......................
