We are using IBM INTERNET CHAT CLIENT FOR JAVA V1.57 on our closed network and when a user tries to log in the connection is immediately closed, this doesn't have anything to do with permissions. I have used this users credentials on other pc's without any problem.

OK, so now I have uninstalled McAfee and all JAVA except JAVA 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_12 and when I click on the link to the chat it doesn't even show the logon box, it's almost like it is now blocking the jpeg or whatever the logon box is displayed in???? What else could be blocking the box to log in?

From the message, it seems that McAfee is blocking the communication. What is the file that is being blocked?? You can open the McAfee Console, and have a look at the 'Access Protection Logs' to get more details of this error. Try looking at that for more information.
