Need to find chat software that can be used for free on a web site

Dear fellow developers:

I am looking to find chat software that is available for free online that I can embed into a web site that I am trying to develop.  I realize that there are tonnes of free chat applications out there, but most of the ones that I have found online make you link to their servers.  I am looking for a chat application that I can embed into my site (with full java source code if possible), that I can moderate via an administrator (who can either block an individual or many individuals from chatting),  individual chatters are distinguished by a unique colour, and a log is kept of the entire chat session.

As I mentioned, I would like to get a live chat software that is free, written in java, fully customizable, and allows for a moderated chat by an administrator with several users.

Try openfire as a chat server and jwchat as client which can be embedded in your application. This combination fulfills your all needs mentioned in your question. Let me know if you find any issue.

Thanks so much to all of your responses, and my sincerest apologies for the delay in responding.  One quick question to prshntksngh, how do you embed jwchat into your existing web page?  Do you have a link to a tutorial that shows you how to do this?

:( As per my knowledge there is no tutorial. You have to play with source code of JWchat(iframes + javascript).

Ok, but another follow up question I have is, do I need to have a chat server for me to do this, or can I simply embed a chat applet directly into my web application without the need of a server at all?  I unfortunately am new to chat applications which is why I am asking.

Openfire is the server which communicates to Jwchat(client) and you will definitely need a chat server.
Try login in to www.intelevision.com to check the chat application
