If you have connections from outside network, it can be dangerous.
If your employees likes chit-chat in a working hours - they will waste your time and money.
However there is a few solutions, because IM benefits is still huge.
1. Use local IM.
2. Restrict users from sending message( where this ability is unnecessary ).
3. Disallow them to delete any conversations.

Trillian is only client to other IM networks and it use protocols of the other networks. Security is depends on protocol that you'll use.
All they isn't secure by the one point, messages will go outside your networks and will be processed at the third party servers that are managed by third party companies and they have no any relationships with you. Only by this point, it's not really secure for a corporate use.
