Question

Opening Skype through Checkpoint R70

Asked by: unreal217

Skype is currently being blocked by the checkpoint R70 firewall and I need some assistance opening it up. SmartDefense has been disabled completely, yet I still cannot log into Skype. Are there certain IP addresses and ports I need to open? I'm trying to direct communication through ports 80 and 443. In the Skype software I specified port 80 and ticked the box to use 80 and 443 as alternative incoming connections.

I'm running the latest version of Skype and the software works just fine from an outside line. Please help.

Hi,

Can you see blocked packets in your logs? If not, turn on logging for all your rules as a temp measure and attempt the connection again - please post back your findings. Normally Skype should not need any special ports opened.

Thanks

There are no blocked packets in the log files showing port 80 or 443 when testing with a specific user. There were attempts made with other ports, but I do not want to open anything else. From everything I have read, 80 and 443 should be all that is needed anyway.

I am thinking we may just flip a secondary physical port over to DSL for this particular user, bypassing the firewall completely. Still, as more users request Skype, I'll probably run into this problem again.

Any other suggestions? I couldn't find any articles stating that Skype connects to this IP address, or range of addresses, each time when logging in. Ideally, that is what I would need. Skype seems to be a moving target.

Hmm, couple of thoughts. Are you using a web proxy at all in your work?

Also, have you checked your SmartDefense settings or IPS blade as it's known in R70? Make sure that you have allowed Skype if you're using SD.

Are you getting an error message from Skype at all?

If you are misfortunate enought to live in United Arab Emirates (UAE) then you may well find that total access to Skype has been blocked.

grimkin, you may be onto something there as we are using a web proxy. I have not gotten back to this question in some time since we did decide to build a PC and place it on an outside network to allow Skype. I'll accept your solution grimkin, thank you for the help.

grimkin was on the right track from what I can tell, but I am more or less withdrawing the question.
