Question

Email Newsletter Bayesian Spam Problem

Asked by: robertarmbrister

I have created  a newsletter that will be sent tomorrow for one of our clients but I am having an issue where it is being caught in the spam filter. The Bayesian spam is being listed as 99%! How do I fix this? I do not understand what needs to be done to fix this issue of the Bayesian Spam.

I am using PHPList for my opt-in, opt-out and most of the email is in html format.

Can someone explain how to fix these issues below?

 pts rule name              description
---- ---------------------- --------------------------------------------------
 3.5 BAYES_99               BODY: Bayesian spam probability is 99 to 100%

 1.0 EXTRA_MPART_TYPE       Header has extraneous Content-type:...type= entry
 0.1 RDNS_NONE              Delivered to trusted network by a host with no rDNS
 2.6 HTML_OBFUSCATE_10_20   BODY: Message is 10% to 20% HTML obfuscation
 0.0 HTML_MESSAGE           BODY: HTML included in message
-1.8 AWL                    AWL: From: address is in the auto white-list

Bayes is an auto training system so if it thinks it is spam on your system it might not on another.

Bayes works by keeping a record of tokens (typically words and other characteristics) and the number of spams and non-spams they occur in. The more words you have which mostly occur in spam the higher the bayes score will be.

send me a copy to test@cdlive.co.uk if you would like to knowhow I score it.
I might also be able to make furthur suggestions to improve the likelyhood of the message getting through.

Please post here when you have sent it incase it is classed as spam my end.

I have sent a test email. There should be the html version and the Text version.

by: grbladesPosted on 2007-10-25 at 04:58:12ID: 20146717

These are the scores that hit for the html message :-
score=3.603 required 5
BAYES_50 0.00
EXTRA_MPART_TYPE 1.00
HTML_MESSAGE 0.00
HTML_OBFUSCATE_10_20 2.60

You have lots of stuff like this :-
<td align="left" width="155"><img style="BORDER-RIGHT: #000000 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #000000 1px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #000000 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #000000 1px solid" height="95" alt="" width="125" border="0" name="img1" src="http://www.badruttspalace.com/newsletter/winter07/col-1.gif" /> </td>
If you can reduce the amount of html code then you should be able to get the obfuscation down from the 10-20% to the 5%-10% which will reduce the score to about 0.6.

This looks fine.

I would go to http://www.dnswl.org and register yourself on that free dns whitelist.

If anything its a bit worse. The backhair and chickenpox rules try to match text which should never appear next to each other. When you have almost random looking parts to unsubscribe links the odd one of these rules matching is almost unevitable.

score=4.701, required 5
BAYES_00 -0.50,
EXTRA_MPART_TYPE 1.00,
HTML_MESSAGE 0.00,
HTML_OBFUSCATE_10_20 2.60,
J_BACKHAIR_22 1.00,
J_CHICKENPOX_32 0.60)

I now get it. So since I have tested like a couple hundred times on our server with this newsletter and previous newsletters. This is why it is showing as spam.

by: grbladesPosted on 2007-10-25 at 07:49:01ID: 20148092

I am using spamassassin 3.2 with a large number of additional rules loaded.

by: grbladesPosted on 2007-10-25 at 07:52:34ID: 20148127

Bayes does not automatically learn something as spam unless the spam score is over 20. Bayes on my system was 50% sure the first time and 0% the second time so it does not look like bayes will be a problem for you.

I think your major problem is the large amount of html code you are using in order to do the fancy layout.

I take it you have applied to DNSWL and that will help when it takes effect in a couple of days.
You can also get paid for services such as Habeas. Full details on my website at http://www.gbnetwork.co.uk/mailscanner/

Thats weird,

I did not change anything with my unsubscribe link from what was originally in the email sent to you.

What could have changed that caused this?

by: grbladesPosted on 2007-10-25 at 07:58:31ID: 20148179

I dont know to be honest. Those rules are very complicated regular expressions.

by: robertarmbristerPosted on 2007-10-25 at 07:58:49ID: 20148185

I have sent you one more test message, as I would like to see if this shows up differently.

by: grbladesPosted on 2007-10-25 at 08:04:42ID: 20148237

score=3.102, required 5,
BAYES_00 -0.50,
