Unable to receive email from certain senders

Hi

We are unable to receive email from certain senders. The one sender gets an undeliverable note. (Internet header attached), the other user gets no undeliverable note. When the user that doesn't get any undeliverable message enables the option to receive a delivery receipt, they get the receipt back saying that the message was successfully delivered however we don't receive any email from them. I have asked our ISP to check if we are not listed as SPAM senders (still waiting for their confirmation).

I have checked our TREND spam filters and also marked both senders to the approved sender list.

I have sent a test message using Telnet from another external computer when sending to our server on behalf of both their servers posing as a known user on their mail server and I did receive the Telnet tests from both senders.
We do make use of NATting on our Cisco 800 router. We have 5 static IP addresses. The router was recently swapped due to a hardware fault. There is a possibility that our mail receiving problems could have started from then on.

Please investigate the attached message header we got from the one sender.

Thanks
Quintin

Can you clarify if Mail Control is your Host, or the senders smart host?

It appears that Mail Control Are unable to relay the message, but is that your middle man or the senders?

Mail Control must be their smart host or something.

I would start by checking your DNS is 100% correct and that your exchange server is available externally without issue.

I ran exchange best practice analyzer and found the following problems on the exchange server.
- Performance monitor service not started
- Database backup critical (we use Backup Exec so not too concerned)
I found not other errors or suggestions.

BPA found 1 Domain containing a DNS entry for ourdomain.local

Our ISP has confirmed that our domain is not listed on any spam servers.

The issue is probably DNS related.

I suggest using something like mailcontrol.com or dnsstuff.com to check all your DNS and MX records are functioning.

I had the DNS ckecks done and found that our SOA and NS records are not correct. I can't see how this could have caused email not to come through all of a sudden. I have requested Yahoo to assist with updating those records. It seems we would only be able to update the NS records through Yahoo. They don't update SOA records yet.

I have also established in the mean time that we lastly received emails from one of the problematic domains on the 7th of August 2008. When I lookked at system event logs for that day I found the following system even log error.

 Event Id : 2002
The server certificate for instance '1' could not be retrieved because it could not be found in a certificate store; the error encountered was '0x80092004'

Is there a way to repair or reinstall that certificate?

Thanks
What service is the error in regards to?

We are still unable to receive email from only a few senders. We have looked at DNS, re-installed SMTP certificates checked on PTR records for our domain, checked that we are not allowing open relaying, even changed to secondary NS records with Yahoo instead of the standard primary server. We have tried flushing and re-registering DNS on our server. We are now investigating our Cisco 800 series router since some of our clients get the error "connection timeout". If you have any other suggestions to resolve our email problems, please share. I am willing to try anything already.
I am experiencing something similar, I can't receive email from my home account, but everyone else I've tried to send to receives the email within our domain, using GFI and I don't even see the mail reach GFI since mail hits it before the exchange server.  If I figure out the problem, I will let you know but it seems like it is related.

Here's another fix maybe, for some reason, Internet Message Filtering started deleting emails even though the SCL rating did not meet the criteria for deletion, I raised the level to block to a 6 even though I wanted a 4, when I did that, I could get the emails that were being blocked which made no sense because of the SCL rating.  So if it happens to you again, you may want to check those settnigs.
