Question

OWA workaround for copying items to public folders

Asked by: wibber1

Hi.  We're using Exchange 2003 R2 with GFI MailEssentials 12 as our anti-spam solution.  If items are incorrectly classified as (not) spam you inform the GFI system by copying the email to an Exchange public folder which the system scans to build whitelists/blacklists etc.  Unfortunately OWA on 2003 doesn't let you copy to public folders.  Anyone know a workaround for copying messages to public folders so that our remote users running OWA can fix incorrectly classified spam?

You could mail enable the public folder for the antispam and then simply forward the email to that email address and it will get into the public folder.  Not sure if the scan will work properly as the origonal headers wont be there, but message content will be.  I would try that, otherwise I dont know of a way to copy / move between mailbox and public folder through OWA.  You could also use RPC over HTTPS for remote access which could be another solutions.

Thanks.  That will work nicely for email where the content is the issue but you are correct in that losing the original headers will cause a problem.  It means that for whitelists and blacklists it will list the forwarder rather than the original sender.

RPC over HTTPS would allow your remote workforce to use Outlook 2003 as if connected to Exchange and bypass OWA, thus giving you the functionality of moving / copying these items to public folders.
