Question

Problem with Mdaemon content filter

Asked by: vedant0500

Hello,

Recently i created a rule on mdaemon that
1) if message sizes is greater than 3 MB
2)send a note to the sender and
3)delete the meesage
the above rules is for everyone but for VIP users i created a seperate rule for unlimited size mail sending.

1)if from headers contains user1@domain.com or user2@domain.com
2)skip next and rules 1 that is the first rule.

Both above rules are basically for restricting the users to send mail size not more than 3 MB except for V.I.P users.

Now the problem is the rule is working sometime and sometimes its not (the rule for VIP users)

sometimes even their mails get bouncd back even though they are in the exclusion list.I have to delete the user and put it back again.
i don't know why is this happening can someone please help me.??

Looks ok to me what you have done.

Are the VIP senders in fact sending using the account specified?  If they have two accounts on their email client e.g., user1@domain.com and anotherusername@domain.com, then obviously if they sent using anotherusername@domain.com it would be bounced and deleted.

The Content Filter tab will tell you the progress of each message through the rules chain - presumably you have had a look at this and found no indication of reason for failure?

>I have to delete the user and put it back again.

This puzzles me somewhat.  Tell you what, what would be better would be to split out Rule #1 into two rules:-

rule #1 if user1@ then skip 2 rules
rule #2 if user2@ then skip 1 rule
rule #3 if message>3Mb then send note and delete

by: vedant0500Posted on 2009-02-20 at 03:59:10ID: 23691012

actually the rules somewhat works like this

1)if from headers contains user1@domain.com or user2@domain.com
2)skip next and rules 1 that is the first rule.

           Skip Rule this

1) if message sizes is greater than 3 MB
2)send a note to the sender and
3)delete the meesage.

And if the rule does not work than for any of the VIP users than i have to delete the user from the list and put him back again.

i hope the above things makes you unnderstand the situation.

the users are only having 1 user account in ther mail client still they are facing this issues sometimes, i dont know why this rules works sometimes and sometimes not.

if you want to see this rule please check the below link it is the same.

>i have to delete the user from the list

Not quite sure what list you are referring to here?

Try splitting the rules as I suggested - it could be that the OR is somehow getting interpreted as an AND by the Content Filter.  By splitting the rule into two it is easier to see what is happening in the Content Filter logging screen.

Had a look at the link you provided

Make sure that the Miscellaneous Options, Data Transfer Limits, Max acceptable SMTP message size is reset to 0.

by: vedant0500Posted on 2009-02-20 at 23:19:13ID: 23698798

in Miscellaneous Options, Data Transfer Limits, Max acceptable SMTP message size is already reset to 0.

Have you tried my other suggestions?

The only other thing I can suggest you do is that you lodge a support ticket with Altn, the software publishers.

i also tried doing (and) between all the mail ids instead of (or) but that does not seem to be working in the exclusion list.

i have raised support to mdaemon today lets see what they have to say.

by: moorhouselondonPosted on 2009-02-21 at 01:40:41ID: 23699189

No, what I meant was to create two separate rules, rather than just having one rule for the VIPuser test.  Another thing you could do: just do it for one VIP user to start with: does that work?

by: vedant0500Posted on 2009-02-21 at 02:34:42ID: 23699411

i have around 25 VIP users which are there in the exclusion list but my concern was that why the rule works sometimes flowless and sometimes not.

There has to be an upper limit to the size of text in the rule.  OK Mdaemon should do "boundary checking" on the size of the Rule text, and reject any rules that spill over the limit.  But if the text is handled by some kind of operating system library routine then, well, anything could happen.

Split the rule up into individual rules with a relevant "skip x rules" after.  However, a much more robust way to handle what you are tring to achieve is as follows:-

Rule #1 If vip1@ then Add a Header X-VIP
Rule #2 If vip2@ then Add a Header X-VIP
etc.

Rule #25 If vip25@ then Add a Header X-VIP
Rule #26 If Header X-VIP exists then Skip 1 Rule
Rule #27 If message>3Mb then Send Note to sender and delete message.
