Question

How do I fix a laptop thats been on a domain, so it can used on a workgroup?

Asked by: LeeRobertE

I have a laptop that I used inside a workplace operating in a domain.  That work has finished and now the laptop will not communicate with my workgroups on my personal network.  I believe the problem has to do with something left over from the domain access.  It WILL connect to the internet through my linksys wireless router and cable modem but it does not find any of the other computers within my network.  I have two other laptops and two desk tops that all communicate ok.  I've done a ipconfig on all and the only irregularity I can see is the one thats not communicating has DOMAIN.INVALID in the dns suffix where all the others have hsd1.va.comcast.net.  I went into the system properities, computer name change and added the dsn suffix to this computer but it made no difference.  I then checked the other working computers and the primary dsn suffix was blank on all of them.  I've tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew but that didn't help either.  I'm not sure what to do next.  Any suggestions would be appreciated

Remove it from the domain.

Control Panel - System properties - Computer name - Click Channge - Slect workgroup and give it the new workgroup name.

If you are still logging on to this laptop to a domain profile (using your the username and password for the old domain) make sure you back up your profile first as it may not be acessible after removing it from the domain.

You must be logged on with local administrator priveleges to remove a computer from a domain.

I have already done that but it must not have worked. Every since that I've not been able to see any of the other computers on the network and they cannot see this computer.  It will connect to the internet so it is talking to the router and cable modem but not the other computers.   And yes they are all using the same workgroup name.

Uninstall TCP/IP and Microsoft client.
Then reinstall both.

Do this from within the network propeties of your network card.

I unstalled Microsoft client but TCP/IP dims out the uninstall and doesn't allow you to uninstall it.  Is there another way?  I did uninstall Microsoft client and then reinstalled it but it didn't correct the problem.  I think that or something else I've done has made a difference in the symptoms.  At first when I selected the workgroup i just got the right pane back blank.  Now I get the message (Workgroup - Lee) LEE is not accessible.  you may not have preveliges to acces this network resource...

I also went to the controll panel, add remove programs, add remove windows components and completely remove all network services.  Rebooted the computer and reinstalled the same and rebooted again.  No improvement on the problem.

Try uninstalling the drivers for the network card and then reinstalling them.
That should reset your network configuration.

Just my 2c:
It shouldn't be necessary to uninstall drivers and/or protocols to change network settings.  Sure it could work for the lazy guys.  Windows  XP/later allows more than one network configuration per network interface and to switch betweem them.

The following from MS KB article (KB283676) might help:

Using the Alternate Configuration feature
To use the Alternate Configuration feature:
On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet Connections.
Click Network Connections.
Right-click the local area network (LAN) or high-speed Internet connection that you want to configure and click Properties.
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
Click the Alternate Configuration tab.

It shouldn't be necessary to uninstall drivers but sometimes thats the only way to resolve corrupted network settings.

Thanks guys for your help.  I've been chasing this problem for soooo long that I'm extremely tire of dealing with it.  I finally broke down and although I didn't want to solve it this way I did a recovery from the recovery partition provided by the manufacturer.  After re-creating my network it now works as it should.  Now to reinstall all my apps and I'll be back in business.  :(  Oh well at least it's solved.

Thanks again for your help and I will be back again to seek your help.
