Question

Sending emails to hotmail adress via exchange server.

Asked by: osa2

Hello all,

As I'm trying to send out email to a hotmail account. I'm getting a NDR from the exchange server. Saying that the email wasn't accepted by the hotmail live system.
I don't know why. But we were able to send to hotmail.com adresses before. And now I'm getting this error.

a SMTP-communication error has acceurd at the adresses mail server. Please contact the system administratorr.

<mail.xxxxx.be #5.5.0 smtp;550 DY-002 Mail rejected by Windows Live Hotmail for policy reasons. The likely cause is a compromised or virus infected server/personal computer. If you are not an email/network admin please contact your E-mail/Internet Service Provider for help. Email/network admins, please visit http://postmaster.live.com for email delivery information and support>

I virus checked the pc with sophos anti virus. (nothing found)
I checked postmaster.live.com. Notthing much I can do because most of the items are for the ISP.

So. I'm asking here. Does anybody know what to do?

Best regards,

Osa2

Do you have a SPF DNS Record?

http://www.itsyourip.com/dns/dns-records/spf-resource-record-sender-policy-framework/

by: osa2Posted on 2008-01-02 at 05:15:00ID: 20564072

@lecaf. I'm not so found of giving my ip adres. I will check it if you want on blacklist sites or whatever. But I don't see why I should give it. (for more spam preventing)

@rbkumaran
no we also have the problem on sending to only 1 email adress. It started with sending to many hotmail accounts. But even to only 1 adressee we get this error.
I don't thin we have spf DNS recods. Do we need to let them create by the ISP?

by: rbkumaranPosted on 2008-01-02 at 05:19:20ID: 20564085

I would recommend but please go through the different options for the SPF records before deploying the record and choose the best suited for your organisation. This should mostly fix as Hotmail/Live performs Sender ID check on the sending host and most likely to cause the problem

Who needs to change these records? Me at the server side or my provider on there side?
Sorry but i don't get it. I think the SPF is the soloution. But I dn't know how it is implemented.

Best regards,

Done by those who maintain the Authoritatve DNS server for your domain.

So, if you control the DNS for your domain its you else it will be your ISP

by: ehabsalemPosted on 2008-01-02 at 05:56:23ID: 20564310

Hotmail recommends having an SPF record, though not a must.
go to www.dnsreport.com and query your domain (and not mail test). It wil give you most of the details you need yo know:
SPF, RDNS, RBL, ...

I send out a email after contacting the ISP and they will add an SPF record for our domain.
I will let you know what the answer is.

The simplest answer is probably to set your server to send via the ISPs smarthost

by: kieran_bPosted on 2008-01-03 at 13:49:26ID: 20577316

SPF isn't going to help alot here.  modell is right that the simplest answer will be to use your ISPs smarthost.

You could also try and fix it.  Ensure that you are not on any blacklists, ensure that your domain does not flag ANY errors here -> http://www.dnsreport.com

Usually this fails because you have no reverse DNS, and/or, you have an incorrect SMTP Greeting.  DNSReport will flag those, and we can tell you how to fix it.

I made contact with the ISP and they told me they cannot make SPF records. It is an issue about PTR records. They changed the PTR and it will work. Alltough It is still not working.
So I contacted them again. To ask for the SPF record. No answer so far.

When I try the dnsreport. The SPF gives an error. And also a A record is giving an error.
The domain in qustion is laika.be. Maybe you all can check what needs to be changed.

by: kieran_bPosted on 2008-01-04 at 00:18:49ID: 20580560

a PTR record is the same as reverse DNS as I mentioned.

If you didn't have one of those, then it was never going to work.

The A record problems are not important - no mail server will block you because of that.

How can I check that the PTR record is the correct one?

by: kieran_bPosted on 2008-01-04 at 00:30:10ID: 20580585

If DNSreport does not throw an error, it is fine - but if it makes you feel better, I checked and you are all good.

For your own reference, it should be the same as the forward DNS - mail.yourdomain.com should point to your.ip.addr.ess should point back to mail.yourdomain.com should point....

I added the settings in smarthost and the problem seems to be okay for now. I will let them test if everything works. But is looks like this is working.
