a quick list for "hardening" vista

I know this is an OLD question.
Perhaps answered cumulatively among several different questions, here.
I am in position of suddenly being responsible for taking care of newer machines and seek a quick checklist from a couple of experienced experts.
I would like suggestions for the basics of covering security "hardening" needs for XP, Vista, and win7
Something like a top "5" or "10" list per O/S if possible. Or, just a top "3" -whatever appropriate.
I know the list is "endless" in all reality and changes daily.

I AM studying the topic right now, as best I can, but in a matter of mere days I hope to have a good understanding. I request your assistance in gaining clarity on the topic and the benefit of your cumulative experience in the TOP 5 or 10 items per O/S. ---Your hints for areas of study/concentration.

Any comments regarding networking security and deployment of the desktop O/S's is much appreciated.
