Question

I am getting a "bogus MX Records" msg back when I email a user in Exchange

Asked by: Cyril_Carrigg

When I email a user I get the following message back from my mail server
"You do not have permission to send to this recipient.  For assistance, contact your system administrator.
#5.7.1 smtp;554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Sender address blocked using bogusmx.rfc-ignorant.org; Domain has demonstrably bogus MX records>"

The user can email me, when I "reply" I get the same error. I could email them a few months ago.

From googling it it may be a problem with their ISP not allowing reverse lookups. Is there anything I can do on my end to resolve it?
Appreciate any assistance.

That looks like a RBL lookup. What is the domain you are sending your email from and what is the servers IP address. If you dont want to post it here there is a 'test' email address listed in my profile which you can send it to. Lust post here when it has been sent.

I'm sending from creganna.com mail server ip 172.21.1.19

Your domain has two mail servers listed :-

creganna.com.           86400   IN      MX      20 mxbackup4.webhostingireland.ie.
creganna.com.           86400   IN      MX      15 newmail.creganna.com.

The first one is fine but mxbackup4.webhostingireland.ie points to a CNAME (alias) :-
mxbackup4.webhostingireland.ie. 298 IN  CNAME   mx1.webhostingireland.ie.

According to the RFC standard the MX entry should point to a host which has an A (IP address) record and it is not permitted to post to a record which is a CNAME. This is why you got put on the RBL with rfc-ignorant.

You need to change
mxbackup4.webhostingireland.ie. 298 IN  CNAME   mx1.webhostingireland.ie.
to
mxbackup4.webhostingireland.ie. 298 IN  A 81.17.241.217

Then 24 hours after the change has been made (to allow time for the change to propegate) go to http://www.rfc-ignorant.org/tools/detail.php?domain=creganna.com&submitted=1198636708&table=bogusmx and follow the instructions for getting yourself removed from the list.

I am guessing you are a customer of webhostingireland?
In that case you cant change the record yourself so I would contact their customer support and say to them as a web hosting company they should know what they are doing andnot make such a mistake.

In the meantime you can change :-
creganna.com.           86400   IN      MX      20 mxbackup4.webhostingireland.ie.
to
creganna.com.           86400   IN      MX      20 mx1.webhostingireland.ie.
This will stop the error and effectivly point to the same machine as the backup.
