Browse All TopicsI have received an attachment that I cannot open with either MS Word or WordPerfect. The file name is winmail.dat. It is suppose to be a WordPerfect file.
The only clues I can find are when opening the file in Notepad, I see the string "IPM.Microsoft Mail.Note" near the beginning of the file. This appears to denote some sort of proprietary MS format.
Any ideas as to how I can read this file?

You are correct, it is MS proprietary for Outlook, used to post things between Outlooks. Normally, you do not need to read this enclosure since it contains exactly the same message that you find in the body of the text message. It is caused by the sender having you in their address book as being an MSMAIL user (plus sundry other configuration options in Outlook). If they enter in their address book that you are not, then the winmail.dat will stop appearing. The sender cannot see this "enclosure" at all and will be baffled when you tell him/her that they are sending you winmail.dat. Some recipients are plagued with hundreds of these files, one per message i.e. winmail1.dat, winmail2.dat and so on and so forth. Have sympathy with the inadvertent sender for using a mail client which sends unasked-for enclosures and effectively doubles their transmissions for no purpose.
om/default .aspx?scid =kb;en- us; 197066 about TNEF format.
tnef/ but I would personally not waste my time.
Get your sender to read http://support.microsoft.c
If you are REALLY, REALLY desperate to decode it then read http://www.ericphelps.com/
I hope Eric Phelps does not mind me quoting his last line of that entry:
"Finally, if the person sending you mail is too stupid or there are just too many of them, you'll need to use my program" (to decode the files).
If you are expecting a wordperfect file, then its lack is another problem, the user has failed to attach it.
