The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Setting up remote Exchange Users to manage email with Outlook as opposed to Exchange Web Mail
Tags: exchange, remote, up, outlook
This may have been answered some where before, but I can find it so Experts I need your help!

Here is my dilema....

I have a Microsoft Exchange server 2003.  I have mailboxes setup for all users.  Anyone outside the office can go to https://mail.companyx.net/exchange and easily access their company email via the web with no problem.

However, I have field offices that would like to be able to use Outlook as opposed to WEB Mail.  What is the best/easiest way to configure their Outlook so that they can view their email without having to VPN (slow) or some other method.

Goal:  Rather than having to go to https://mail.companyx.net/.exchange to access his email, Johny can open Outlook on his PC and manage his company email.

Thank you for you help.  if you nee more info let me know as I am not very technical

You want to be using the delightfully named RPC/HTTP.

It is the full outlook client, using only the HTTPS port - rather ingenious, and precisely what you are looking for.

It can be tricky to get going, you need a good certificate (if you get a certificate prompt on OWA now, that is a problem) and then you need to follow the guide EXACTLY.

If you do it right, and have a good certificate, you can have it running in less than an hour.

Red,

I tried setting up the Remote Machine not on domain with no luck.  Do i need to setup the https/rpc configuration on the exchnage server 2003 eventhough I have sp1.  I may have misunderstood but I didn't think I needed to configure the registry on the exchnage server using this method.

Also, where it says exchange.domain.com is that the same as my outlook web access: mail.companyx.net ??

Thanks.

The instructions you have been pointed to are mine.
If you have read everything I have written you will see that my primary recommendation is to get it working on a local machine first, before you try and configure a remote machine.

Have you made the registry changes?

ON the client configuration I have written...

"Complete the options as appropriate for your environment.
Remember that the server name must match the certificate - which may not be the same.
In the example screenshot below the external name is "exchange.domain.com""

So if your SSL certificate is mail.company.net then that is what you enter. What you are using for OWA may or may not be the same thing. It doesn't really matter.

Simon.

The bottomline is Exchange sbs 2003 has limitations and RPC/HTTP requires a lot of time to figure out.  if you don't relaly need it, just let it go...

You were using Small Business Server?

That would have been MIGHTY handy to know.  The SBS wizard actually configures RPC/HTTP for you, and provides complete instructions (http://yourserver/remote (on the right "configure outlook over the internet")

Even without the wizard, it isn't hard, you just need to follow the guide to the letter.

Hi,
The Best way for  user to configure outlook on his/her computer is to add user group to Exchange Server Group by providing necessary security permissions to Exchange Server this can be done by creating a Dword value string in registry with showsecuritypage and assume value 1 and logoff and login to server and now Administrator can see the security page on exchange Admin and from there add group of users list to exchange admin and provide them with Admin rights and now when ever a user logs into his/her system exchange server is locallly visible with admin rights wherein user can add, delete and make changes to exchange server and even configure outlook.
