How do I prevent Outlook Express from asking to compact messages on Windows XP start up? i don't use Outlook Express...
I do not use Outlook Express. I use Outlook 2007. However, this week when I start up the desktop in WindowsXP Sp3, a message from Outlook Express states, "...you may compact your messages...". Since I do not and never plan to use Outlook Express, why is the message occuring and how can I ensure it stops showing up at every boot up sequence?

Whoops...sorry guys...left town for a conferece all last week and now I am burning through 300 emails...
Since I have never opened or used Outlook Express, neither jcimarron's note (although very well stated) nor Lee Tutor's article link really addressed the issue. So, the next time the message came up on screen I just hit the compact button and I figure it will never show up again because I do not use Express for anything (just Outlook 2007).
So I will have to forego the point ditribution on this one...unless either of you think that is unfair or unreasonable...I don't know how desperate you are for the 125 points, but I assume I give them away if someone actually resolves the issue...right?
Not being fecetious here...give me some feedback...

I am the initatior of this question...I am confused. I thought I assigned points to the respondents...do I need to reverse this "closed" option and assign the points some other way? I want the experts to receive points for at least attempting to answer the question.

That is pretty much what I suggested in my post above "just allow the Compacting to proceed."

Yes that's true...and that's why both of your answers were at least helpful in the sense that I could feel free to allow the process to go forward...what was particularly odd to me (and expressed in the question) was that I never in my life use Express...and so to see the message and to read the various suggested posts implied its use. Anyway, I thought I applied the point values, hit submit and then found that the points were not awarded properly. I am hoping a mod will get this resolved so that both you and Lee get the points you deserve for providing a quick response.

I know this is closed already, but this issue just came up with me and I don't use OE or Outlook, and am trying to pinpoint the source.
By any chance, do you have the Windows Search indexer on your system? I think it's version 4, but can't find the location for that info.
My thought is that the indexer is opening or checking the OE files located in the computer which tells OE (or at least its internal counter) that it has started and that it needs to compact folders after 100 starts. Just trying to get some confirmation, so if you have windows search active or installed, please let me know.
For what it's worth, I haven't allowed the Compacting, yet, but it just started three days ago. I'm just a little more paranoid.

Sorry for the delay. I thought the same thing about Windows Search! Never concluded the actual reason, I chocked it up to "unkowingly starting the process somehow"...perhaps an arbitrary link in a web link that opened and started the Express "module"...anyway, I compacted and have never had an issue since. Everything seems to work normally and I still use MS Desktop Search v4 as well. Well, at least until it started hanging on shut down!
Go ahed and compact to resolve, or keep digging around and fill me in if our theory's were correct. Couldn't find anyone that really knew...

Thanks guys, I finally bit the bullet today and "Compacted" myself.
I didn't have any other luck finding any one else's problems (to tell the truth, didn't look too long though) and we shall see in a few months if it asks me again to compact. If it does, Remove Windows Search, I will. To tell the truth, I believe the only OE Mail files I even have on this machine were copied from another user's harddrive so I could reformat his system. And telling Windows Search to not look for them is not an easy task.

Apexadam--I understand you have Outlook Express installed as well as Outlook.
Are you starting up OE at boot? Since you do not use it, do not start it at boot. (You should be able to turn it off by unchecking the box for msimn.exe in Start|Run|type MSCONFIG| OK| Startup tab.)
But if you do start it, just allow the Compacting to proceed. OE automatically asks to compact every 100 times you open it. (Also opening an OE .eml file adds to the count.)
But I think the following will help you turn the message off
