Asked by: Boydig

I use Metronet as my email provider.
I have just started Sky Broadband, but cannot send email using their suggested SMTP setting of:  smtp.tools.sky.com

What operating system are you using?

What is the email client, eg. Windows Mail (Vista), Windows Live Mail, Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Opera, or some other one?

What error message and error code is given on failure?

Did you run any setup CD after subscribing to Sky Broadband?
(If Not, then it usually isn't usually necessary and I don't suggest doing so unless you can help it).

I'm not sure I know what it is you are trying to do exactly.  You have an existing email account with Metronet (now Plusnet), and you have configured a new email account to download and send emails using your email client.  As long as you are connected to the Internet and online, the settings specified in the email client for that Metronet mail server and email address should download and send emails regardless of who your Internet Brodband Provider is.  You can have a number of different accounts set up in your email client, although it's usually necessary to set up Mail Rules to channel incoming messages to separate folders named for each email account.

Incoming Mail Server (POP3): mail.metronet.co.uk
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.metronet.co.uk

By the look of things, the standard Ports SMTP (Port 25) and POP3 (Port 110) Ports are accepted, unlike many these days that require SSL (secure Socket Layer) Port numbers 95 and 465 respectively:
http://www.metronet.co.uk/support/email/email_settings/setup/outlookexpress_mail.shtml

Sky Broadband should also have provided you with a new email address, and by configuring a separate account in your email client you should be able to download and send messages through the Sky email server just as you can send messages through the Metronet mail server.  Their settings DO require SSL Ports 95 (SMTP) and 465 (POP3) and require authentication:

http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-email-portal-log/757-sky-email-setup-settings.html
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/tutorials/1248.html

Of course, if you have actually terminated your subscription account with Metronet, at some point in the near future your mail account will cease to allow downloading or sending of messages through their mail servers.

The two separate account settings in your email client work independently.  Normally you don't have to even specify what Internet Connection to use when sending and receiving email via any of your configured accounts.

For example, I download and send email using several separately configured email accounts using Outlook Express, eg. my Tiscali pop3 account, googlemail, and Yahoo.  I just had to know the correct settings and enable the option in Googlemail to allow this, that's all.

If this hasn't answered your question, or if I have misunderstood your needs, then please let us know so that we can address what it is that you require.

**** BIG WHOOPS ***

Normal SSL POrts are NOT as I stated off the top of my head.  They are:

SMTP = 465
POP3 = 995

Sorry about that.

Your issue is probably just due to the fact that you have not ticked the "My server requires authentication" under the "Servers" tab where it states "Outgoing mail server" in most email client configuration dialogs, like this Windows Live mail one:

Many thanks BIll, your answer was rambling despite the question being clearly stated.
I thought that submitting a query on the Outlook Express part of EE should have made my choice of email program clear enough. Yes, it's Outlook Express.
Thanks for taking the trouble to respond, though I had arrived at the correct conclusion before posting this question, and simply wanted it to provide a simple solution in EE to using OE (or Outlook) with Sky broadband, but NOT using the Sky email facility, but instead another, to which I subscribe namely Metronet (now Plusnet,as you say).
The SOLUTION is to simply go into the email account settings (using your normal email provider's POP and SMTP settings... eg for Metronet it's pop.metronet.co.uk and smtp.metronet.co.uk) and then simply put a tick in the box underneath these 'server, outgoing mail' settings (in OE, at least) to choose that 'My server require authentication'. And that's all you have to do.
For Sky email, just follow the instructions on their web-site:-
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-email-portal-log/757-sky-email-setup-settings.html
I hope that others find this useful, and blast Sky for not providing clear instructions to those in a similar situation. Nick

Hello Nick.

So you thought my comment was "rambling" did you?  Have you any idea how many idiots post questions here in which it becomes necessary to spell things out down to the last letter?  I am not stating that YOU are an idiot, but trying to let you understand that when a question is ambiguous or unclear in certain areas, there are two choices for an expert to decide from at the outset so as not to waste their time:

1. Answer the question as though the person knows a bit about what they are doing, but then become involved in a lengthy discourse during which it is discovered that the member's skill level in that area is slightly lacking whereby it all has to be spelled out.

OR

2. Spell it out from the beginning just in case the member isn't as conversant with certain areas as you had anticipated or hoped, and trust that the member knows that you were covering all possibilities.

In your question, within the area provided, you left out your "skill level", and additionally your question was ambiguous, so I chose the 2nd option.

First you stated that you used Metronet as your email provider.  You then said that you were using Sky-specific smtp settings.  Read it again.  Don't you think that it would leave the reader wondering "what the hell is he up to?  How can he hope to send Metronet email using Sky smtp email settings".

>>> "I thought that submitting a query on the Outlook Express part of EE should have made my choice of email program clear enough." <<<

Actually, the Software Zone is entitled "OE-WindowsLive", despite the URL tending to infer that it relates only to Outlook Express.  People ask about Outlook, Windows Live mail, and a whole host of other clients.  Unless it is made clear, a lot of time can be wasted from the outset by making assumptions.

Anyway, regardless of how "rambling" my comment was, didn't I answer your question as you asked it?  Of course  did!!  You inferred that your SKY smtp settings weren't allowing you to send email.  I answered that in a very logical and idiot-proof way.  I don't really care how long it took you to read it.

>>> "I had arrived at the correct conclusion before posting this question, and simply wanted it to provide a simple solution in EE to using OE (or Outlook) with Sky broadband, but NOT using the Sky email facility." <<<

It gets a bit tedious and annoying when people ask questions to which they already know the answer.  We all have one or two of those people in our workplace or family.  OK, so your motives were probably in the right direction, ie. providing some assistance to other people who have been scratching their heads puzzling over the same problem, but that's the obvious time for THEM to ask a question here just as you did.

If you wanted to create some question for the "Previously Answered Questions" that had a nice neat little one line answer from some guy with a crystal ball, then you should have asked the question more clearly or answered it yourself and saved me from wasting my time as I am doing right now.

There is a thing called "feedback".  If I ask for clarification on something, it's most often for a very good reason rather than me being a an idiot and not understanding something that is staring at me in the face.  I asked you what your error message details and error code were.  Of course, you already knew the "solution" and were just testing us by playing some game, but imagine for a moment that you hadn't already known the answer.  By providing the details of the error code we would have very quickly ascertained that it was an authentication problem.

If you find this comment to be curt and abrasive, then I intended it to be.  Your comment was written deliberately to try and make me look like a fool.  It was insensitive, and unwarranted.  No, I'm not thin skinned.  I can take criticism when I am due it, but not from someone who doesn't know as much in a particular area as I do.  OK?

I don't get paid anything for helping other people here.  Yes, I know YOU do, but if you insist on making unprofessional and unproductive comments in response to other experts who triy to help you with a problem, then those people will eventually just ignore you and get on with more important things they need to do.

Goodbye.

Bill, I'm obviously sorry if my comments upset you, but you patently had not taken the trouble to read and understand the simple question that was posted.
The simple 2 lines that you sent subsequently were enough, and I had already thanked you for that, and awarded you the points, so aren't you lucky.

by: BillDLPosted on 2009-08-20 at 04:19:11ID: 25141069

You haven't awarded any points.  The question is still open.  I don't care whether I get points for any of the questions I comment in here.  I like to help others,  it's as simple as that.

I would suggest that it would be a good idea if you were to just ask a moderator for this question to be deleted with a full points refund.  Maybe you can do this yourself, I've forgotten what options you have in your own question.  I won't object and, seeing as nobody else contributed, nobody else will.  The alternative is just to accept your own comment http:#25134172 as the answer.  That would keep the "solution" in the database of PAQ'd questions.
