Question

email delays - godaddy email service with comcast internet using outlook express

Asked by: webdott

THE SET-UP
our office has switched to godaddy for our email service.
everything is set up properly with this.

we use comcast for our isp provider. we are getting speeds of 14,000 mbps
no internet problems
the internet does not go thru the server, it is set-up on a switch with the router.
no firewall hardware - just norton software

we have 14 computers WINDOWS XP PRO svc pk 3
some with outlook 2000 and the new ones with outllok 2007.
our server is very old - 7 years

THE PROBLEM
our emails are coming and going out very slow and speratic on different systems.
the average time is 5 min to 1 hour creating time-outs. this happens to the old
and new systems the same. one system could get the same email in 5 minutes
while the other gets it in 1 hour.

my thought is that the server has something to do with it.
any thoughts as to why this is happening?

Hi webdott,

What is the function of the server for your company? If you are using GoDaddy for your email accounts, then the server is not an exchange server, correct? You didn't mention having a domain, so I'm assuming it isn't a domain controller, so is it just a file server?

If so, I don't see what the file server would have to do with any of the email problems. Especially if the server isn't in front of all the other computers as they try to send email. If it's on a switch just like all the others it most likely isn't causing any problems. Can you give me some details on what makes you think it's the server?

Lastly, are you sure you have all the email settings set up correctly in outlook for GoDaddy's servers? All the ports are correctly pointed and open on the router? Are you using encryption on your email sending and receiving or is it simply POP3 and SMTP?

sjl1986

thanks for the response.

i was thinking the server - because i had ran out of options???

the computers are on the switch just like the server [ it is a domain server with files and programs used by machines and their users ]

the emails use POP3 and SMTP. i have them set up exactly as godaddy instructs

with the accurate ports. i am confused as to when you say " open on the router "

am i supposed to change a setting in comcast's router for the email ports?

no encryption on the emails

Well, when you say you have a router, we might not be talking about the same thing. A router is a "gateway and firewall" usually. It basically hides your computers from the internet and each service that you allow to enter and exit your network has to have an open port on the router. There are 65,000 plus ports which are much like doors. If the door is closed that the specific software is trying to access, it will not go through, or go through slowly. POP3 and SMTP use ports 110 and 25 normally.

I don't know what kind of router comcast would give you. Are you sure it is a router and not just a modem?

It sounds like if you are having no network trouble, and no internet trouble, that it would have to have something to do with the router or godaddy themselves. Have you contacted them about the problem? You might also need to double check the firewall built into windows.

Also, if you are sending important business emails, you might want to think about using encryption on them. It's pretty easy to set up. I don't know how much I can help you with getting into your router settings if you are unsure how to do that, but normally you can go to "Start > Run > type COMMAND > type IPCONFIG in command prompt". Here you will see your IP address, Subnet Mask, and your Gateway. If you have a basic setup, your Gateway will most likely be your Router/DHCP server. To access the router, plug that Gateway IP address into Internet Explorer and it should pull up the router login page where you can login (if you know the credentials) and begin to look at the settings. Good luck.

thanks i will try the router.

i have already checked the firewall and it is disabled - just norton.

norton is also setup to allow program [ outlook]  access to internet

Ok, that setting with Norton should work. I never user Norton, so I can't tell you exactly how to change any options there, but you might want to try disabling Norton completely (except the virus protection) on just one machine, for testing purposes just to see if it lets an email through with no problem. Then re-enable it immediately. What about Anti-Spam? Do you have anything like that through Norton or some other 3rd party app? It could be slow scanning for spam too. Let me know what you figure out.

i have changed the modem to add ports 25-110 to be open with 30000ms intervals

i will see if that helps. norton is not the issue. i have tested it by completely removing it from a system. no change. i have also allowed norton to allow access in its firewall for this.

i believe it could have been the ports.

will keep you posted.

Ok sounds good. I'm not sure if you typed it correctly, but did you mean you opened ports 25 AND 110? Or ports 25 THROUGH 110? Make sure you open ONLY 25 & 110. The more ports you have open the less secure your network is and as long as you aren't using the ports in between you want them to stay closed at all times. Let me know how the testing goes this week.

by: webdottPosted on 2009-08-24 at 10:22:08ID: 25170379

this is what i have on the modem for each port 25 and 100

by: sjl1986Posted on 2009-08-24 at 10:55:45ID: 25170666

Ok, well the way you are doing it looks right, but make sure you use port 110 and not 100 for POP3 unless you have specifically been told to do so by Godaddy.
